It is a very old song, but very much a gold standard song. I have listened to this song for a long time and liked it very much. Sung by Hemant Kumar and Lata, this is such a lovely “chayageet” kind of song, ideal listening at sleep times, though one can enjoy it anytime, as befits any timeless song, which it certainly is.

Legend has it that Salil Chaudhari, the leading music director of 1950s refused to take Kishore Kumar seriously on finding out that Kishore Kumar was untrained in classical music. But when he listened to Kishore Kumar’s voice, Salil Chaudhari changed his opinion and agreed to use Kishore Kumar’s voice in his forthcoming movie called “Naukri”, where Kishore Kumar incidentally was acting too.

“Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje” was a musical blockbuster of its time. This movie had many songs that broke new ground in the history of Bollywood filmy music.
One of the memorable songs from this movie was this duet sung by Lata and Hemant Kumar. And just notice the lyrics. Hasrat Jaipuri, considered a shayar, has written this song where you cannot find any trace of urdu shayari. The words are written in simple semi rural dialect of Hindi spoken in UP.

“Kabuliwala”, a movie based on Rabindranath Tagore’s moving story of the same name, was significant in many respects. The fact that Bollywood adopted stories of great writers was praiseworthy. The other fact that the story faithfully followed the story was also nice.
In fact, it was a movie that perhaps did the most to popularise this story.
