Zara nazron se kahdo jee nishaana chook na jaaye

Posted on: December 30, 2008

There are many songs in which hero teases the lady in Bollywood movies. The degree of teasing depends on the hero as well as on the singer. With heroes like Dharmendra, Shammi Kapoor singing in the voices of Kishore Kumar or Rafi, you can expect teasing of a vigorous nature, where the hero would shake up everything up in sight.

But there could be much gentler forms of teasing as well. For instance look at this song sung by Hemant Kumar and picturised on Vishwajeet and Waheeda Rahman.

Granted that Vishwajeet is not the allowed the scope of a Shammi Kapoor in this song, but the picturisation is cute in its own way. And for those who like gentle, unhurried, serene kind of music and picturisation, this song by Hemant Kumar is right up there among the best. This song is a Hemant Kumar classic, that one can listen to any number of times.

Song-Zara nazron se kahdo jee (Bees Saal Baad) ( 1962) Singer-Hemant Kumar, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni,MD-Hemant Kumar

Lyrics

zaraa nazron se kah do jee
nishaanaa chook na jaaye
zaraa nazron se kah do jee
nishaanaa chook na jaaye
zaraa nazron se kah do jee
mazaa jab hai tumhaari har adaa
qaatil hi kahlaaye
zaraa nazron se kah do jee
nishaanaa chook na jaaye
zaraa nazron se kah do jee…

qaatil tumhe pukaaroon ke jaan-e-wafaa kahoon
hairat mein pad gayaa hoon ke main tum ko kyaa kahoon
zamaanaa hai tumhaaraa
zamaanaa hai tumhaaraa chaahe jiski zindagi le lo
agar meraa kahaa maano to aise khel na khelo

haay, kitni maasoom lag rahi ho tum
tumko zaalim kahe wo jhoothaa hai
ye bholaapan tumhaaraa
ye bholaapan tumhaaraa ye sharaarat aur ye shokhi
zaroorat kyaa tumhen talwaar ki teeron ki khanjar ki
ye bholaapan tumhaaraa ye sharaarat aur ye shokhi
zaroorat kyaa tumhen talwaar ki teeron ki khanjar ki
nazar bhar ke jise tum dekh lo wo khud hi mar jaaye
zaraa nazron se kah do jee
nishaanaa chook na jaaye
zaraa nazron se kah do jee…

ham pe kyun is qadar bigadti ho
chhedne waale tumko aur bhi hain
zaraa nazron se kah do jee
nishaanaa chook na jaaye
zaraa nazron se kahdo jee
mazaa jab hai tumhaari har adaa qaatil hi kahlaaye
zaraa nazron se kah do jee
nishaanaa chook na jaaye
zaraa nazron se kah do jee…

This is a song characteristic of those days when life was slower and gentler! Another song sung by Hemant Kumar in the same teasing vein – “Beqarar karke humen yoon na jaaiye …” is also reminiscent of those slower days.

Thanks for writing about these songs.

Like you say, gentle, unhurried, serene.
Lovely song. And very nice picturisation also.

Could you please also post “beqarar karke humen” from this same movie ? Or have you already posted it ?

I will post that song tomorrow.

This film,i.e.,Bees Saal Baad was the biggest hit of the year 1962 followed closely by Ek Musafir Ek Haseena.

Thanks for this information. That must have been quite an achievement, since movies like “Ganga Jamuna”, “Aarti” “Anpadh” “Jab pyaar kisi se hota hai” etc were also released that year.

Lovely song. I can almost see the smile on Hemant Kumar’s face when he sang this. You can hear the teasing smile in the singer’s voice even if you don’t actually watch the clip.

I am also thinking of gentle teasing by the woman, as in “Bhanwara bada nadaan hai …” in Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam. There also you can hear the smile in the singer’s voice.

Incidentally, it looks like there were a whole lot of movies with outstanding songs around that period, such as Baat Ek Raat Ki “Na tum hamen jaano …”, Junglee “Yahoo,…”, Dr. Vidya “Pawan diwanee …”, Hum Dono (gosh, all the songs were great in that movie!) Truly a great period.

Happy New Year, everyone! Keep up the great work, Atul.

You are right Lalitha “Bhanwara Bada Nadaan” also has that smile one can hear 🙂 , it makes these teasing songs so much more likeable if the singer can actually get into the character.

Lovely. Hemant da was so different from the rest of the singers, and that is very appealing.
