We are celebrating the eighty-sixth birth anniversary of the genius music director Rahul Dev Burman today (27 June 2025) who was born on this day in the year 1939.

Any discussion about songs composed by Rahul Dev Burman is incomplete without discussing songs penned by Gulzar Saab. The association of Pancham viz. Pancham was assisting his father Sachin Dev Burman – ‘The Prince – Musician’, and Gulzar Saab was assisting the great director Bimal Roy. Both Gulzar and Pancham struggled together to gain foothold in their chosen individual fields.

Rahul Dev Burman or Pancham, as he was fondly known, made his debut in Hindi movies with the 1961 movie ‘Chhote Nawaab’. Rahul Dev Burman went on to create some of the most timeless classics, musical gems and overall good music which ruled the the roost and topped music charts for more than a decade.

“Raaja Raani” was directed by Sachin Bhowmick. He was also the writer of this movie.

Sachin Bhowmick (17 July 1930– 12 April 2011) was mainly a writer (story and screenplays) for many movies in Hindi. ‘Raaja Raani’ was the only movie that he directed. The producer of ‘Raaja Rani’ was Jagdish Kumar, and it was presented by J. Omprakash.

The cast of ‘Raaja Raani’ had Sharmila Tagore, Rajesh Khanna, Raj Mehra, Iftekhar, David, Suresh, Brahm Bharadwaj, Asit Sen, Altaaf, Naaz, Dulari, Praveen Pal, Ravikant, Madhup Sharma, Kanu Rai, Uma Dutt, Ratna, Ashok Saxena, Master Manoj, Master Chiku, Baby Subiya, Surender Shore, Indrani Mukherjee, V.K. ‘Mrigtrishna’ (1975) was produced by Jagdish Naheta and was directed by Rajendra Nath Shukla. The cast included Yogita Bali, Rakesh Pandey, Manisha, Jalal Agha, Shahi Agha (debutant), Darshan Arora, Tom Alter, Deena Pathak etc. Hema Malini made a guest appearance as a classical dancer in the film and Sona made her special appearance as a tamaasha dancer. The film was certified by Censor Board sometime in 1975 and was premiered in a film festival in the same year. However, the film got limited theatrical release only sometime in 1979.

Devta (Snake God) is a 1956 Hindi partly coloured swashbuckler film written by Sadasiva Bramham and directed by Pattana. The film stars Vyjayanthimala in the title role, along with Gemini Ganeshan and Anjali Devi in the lead, while Agha, Bipin Gupta, Krishna Kumari and M. N. Nambiar form an ensemble cast. The film was produced by Narayanan Iyengar with his production company-Narayanan Company. The music was composed by C. Ramchandra, with lyrics provided by Rajendra Krishan. The film was a remake of the 1955 Tamil film Kanavane Kankanda Deivam.

The main cast included Smita Patil, Nasiruddin Shah, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Ranjit Chowdhry with the supporting cast of Anjali Paigankar, Savita Bajaj, Suhas Bhalekar, Dilip Dhawan, Rohini Hattangadi, Sudhir Pande, Alka Kubal, Madan Jain, Salim Ghouse, Satish Kaushik, Sumant Mastakar, Arun Bakshi, Ratan Gurung etc. The film was based on a novella by the same name in Marathi written by Jaywant Dalvi, one of the greatest Marathi novelists, short story writers and the playwrights.

Today’s song is yet another song from the year 1975. This is from the movie ‘Uljhan-1975’. I had never watched this movie till recently, when I watched it on a video sharing platform. This movie is a nice movie to watch, and all the actors/actresses have performed their roles well. This film keeps one engaged till the end even though we already know who-killed-who in the very beginning of the movie. This movie ranked at number thirteenth (13th) among the top Hindi movies of 1975 at the box office.

‘Raaj Tilak’ (1958) was simultaneously shot in Hindi along with ‘Vanjikottai Valiban’ (1958) in Tamil. Both the films were produced and directed by S S Vasan under the banner of Gemini Pictures. While Gemini Ganesan, Vyjayantimala and Padmini were the common actors for both Hindi and Tamil films. Jagirdar, Bipin Gupta, Lalita Pawar, Durga Khote, Pran, Manmohan Krishna, Agha, Shammi, Meenakshi etc worked only in the Hindi version of the film. C Ramchandra composed the songs for both Tamil and Hindi films. The film was inspired from the novel, ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ (1844) by Alexandre Dumas. The screenplay of the story was written by Ramanand Sagar.
