We have all played antakshari at least once in our life time. There will definitely be many who will say that it is more that once. So when does a group feel like playing it? Probably when on a bus to some picnic spot with friends or on a train or sometimes even at marriage functions. At least these were the times my group, whether it be a bunch of cousins or classmates, indulged in the game. Especially if it was raining and we can’t go out on the field during lunch hour during school days. Now my daughter says that they used to play the game daily on the way to school in their bus. I remember there was this cousins wedding in ’85 and the gamer that we started went on for around 5 hours with no team willing to give up. O it was a lot of fun. And then our elders had to physically dismantle the group to disperse the group.

Looking at the title of the song, most people are justified if they exclaim-“What ! This song was not yet covered !!”. My excuse is the same old one. All these days I was under the impression that this song was already covered long back.

KAAFILAA (1952) was produced under the banner of Munshi Productions and directed by Arvind Sen. Ashok Kumar and Nalini Jaywant were in lead roles with Motilal, Ranjan, Amita, Nazir Hussain, Sunalini Devi etc in supporting roles. The film had 8 songs written by Vrajendra Gaud (5), Kavi Pradeep (2) and Moti (1) which were set to music by Husnlal-Bhagatram (HB). Three songs have already been covered in the blog. The film may have failed miserably on the box office as even sketchy information on the film’s story and synopsis is not available. But going by the star cast, the film may have had an intricate story not properly translated into a gripping presentation on the screen for the audience to appreciate it.

Since time immemorial, classical and semi-classical ( thumri, dadra, khayal etc,) music have been the privilege mainly of the higher strata of the society. As such, they have not been as popular as the film music as the latter has a wider reach. Then we have the legacy and a rich heritage of regional folk music which remained within the confines of the respective regions. However, with the advent of talkies and playback singing from early 1930s, film songs based on the classical ragas, semi-classical and folk tunes have played a major role in popularising these genres of Indian music especially during the golden era of the film music. In a way, films have become the catalyst for providing equal opportunity to all across India to access music.

Divas of hindi film music (16)

We come to this song from the film Aas Paas (1980). This Lata song I have always liked and it constantly comes to mind whenever I think of her ability to sing all type of songs. This is a club song as well as a ‘ drunk ‘ song. Lyricist and composers are again Anand Bakshi and Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Today (6 december 2013) is the death anniversary of singer-music director Arun Kumar Mukherji. I came to know of this fact from the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation’s “Puraani Filmom ke Geet” programme of today. In this programme, they sought to play only songs of Arun Kumar Mukherji except the last song, which is always a K L Saigal song.

Divas of Hindi film music (15)

Continuing with Lata Mangeshkar songs, I found another song from an all time classic music score. This time it is the lone song remaining to be posted from the musical block buster ‘Shree 420′ (1955).
