Among all the movies based on the story of “Devdas”,”Devdas”(1955) is arguably the most memorable one in all respects, and unarguably so as far as its music is comcerned. The musical team of this movie, as well as the team on whom the songs were picturised cannot be replicated again.

When one looks at the calender of Hindi movie music, one finds that almost every day of the year is important in one respect or the other. Today (31st march) for instance is the day when Meena Kumari expired exactly 40 years ago. I was a school kid at that time and we school kids, on hearing this news opined that “Paakeeza”, the much awaited movie of Meena Kumari would benefit from her death. And the judgement of us pre teen kids turned out to be accurate. 🙂 What Prophetic kids we were those days! 🙂

‘Ghazab kiyaa tere waade pe aitbaar kiyaa’ is a famous ghazal written by Daagh Dehlvi. Ever since I heard this ghazal sung by Mohammed Rafi for the first time in late 60s, I am spellbound by his rendition. In fact, I scouted for a gramophone record in 78 rpm of this song in early 70s and I was able to get a brand new record. I must have played this record many times and now I can tell which points Mohammed Rafi takes a momentary pause while singing this ghazal. This non-filmy ghazal was set to music by Khayyam. This ghazal has also been sung by many well known singers of thesub-continent such as Mehdi Hasan, Pankaj Udhas, Mallika Pukhraj, Farida Khanumand many more. With due respect to all these singers who are numero uno in their own rights, I still prefer to listen to Mohammed Rafi’s version.

Listening to well known old classics is a pleasurable exercise. But discovering old forgotten songs from old forgotten movies and listening to them is an equally and often more pleasurable exercise.
Here is a song which I discovered just now, more than half a century after this song was created.

The mention of the title “Chaudhvin Ka chaand” (1960) is enough for one to recall the title song of this movie which I was aware of for as long as I can remember. That is how popular this song was. Let me hasten to add that I was not born when this movie and its songs were released, but I recall hearing this song in late 1960s. Other songs of this movie were also popular , but unlike the above mentioned song, they did not contain the title, so I was not aware that they also belonged to the same movie.
