In between the many other events and anniversaries that we keep track of, there are some other significant developments that continue to inch along quite unobtrusively. And the corresponding milestones continue to pass at their own pace. Some of the blog regulars keep a watch and do send messages and comments. But since these are not any fixed dates or known numbers that we know are reaching specific way stops, they appear when they do.

The Voice of Mukesh #40
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

An amazing song, a truly amazing song. The arrangement of the music and the play of the singing voices as the song moves from one singer to another to chorus, with multiple combinations. This turned out to be a difficult song to transcribe. 🙂

The Voice of Mukesh #39

A rare song, and a very infrequent combination indeed. This is a duet sung by Mukesh and Surinder Kaur. Continuing the series of pending Mukesh songs, and now traversing the year 1949, we come across this gem of a song from an obscure film, ‘Daada’. The duo have sung together only in two films, this one and ‘Sunehre Din’, also from the same year. All songs of ‘Sunehre Din’ are already posted here. From ‘Daada’, there are two Mukesh songs pending, and today I bring on one of them.

With this post, we are back to the film ‘Shabnam’ (1949). There are four songs in this film that carry Mukesh’s voice, and this song is the fourth one in the list, to be posted on this blog.

The Voice of Mukesh #37

Ah haa, another lovely ghazal, this time from a lesser known film from 1949. The film is ‘Nazaare’, from the renowned banner of Ranjeet Movietone. The film is directed by Prahlad Dutt. A reading of the star cast indicates this would be one of those assembly line outputs of Ranjeet. The star cast includes Shashikala, Agha, Satish, Shanti Madhok, Khan, Anwari, Ramesh Thakur, Ram Avtar, Rajendra. The poet for the lyrics is identified as Rajinder Krishan, and the music is from the baton of Bulo C Rani. The film has sixteen songs in all, and a bit surprising that Bulo C Rani thought of using Mukesh for only one song in this film.

1949, in my opinion, is the pinnacle of Hindi film music. Many a music directors, lyricists and singers, wrote their histories in this year. There has been great music both before and after this singular year. But the numbers and quality of music from this year, simply speaks for itself.

Today I am posting the next song by Mukesh, from the year 1949. The film is ‘Lekh’. Given that this film stars the famous pairing of that era – Motilal and Suraiyyaa, I am guessing that this film must have been one of the successes of its time. Maybe so, but today, the name sounds unfamiliar and obscure.
