The Voice of Mukesh #38
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

With this post, we are back to the film ‘Shabnam’ (1949). There are four songs in this film that carry Mukesh’s voice, and this song is the fourth one in the list, to be posted on this blog.

The scenario for this song seems to be similar to the one discussed a few days ago. The song posted was “Tumhaare Liye Huye Badnaam”. The settings, the dresses, and the players are all the same. I have not seen this film, but I do wonder whether these songs are played very close to each
other in the film. Kamini Kaushal appears to be a royal persona, who seems to be under some kind of restraint. Jeevan is chaperoning her, along with his henchman. And the troupe of gypsy dancers is doing the entertainment honors. It is the same troupe. The same Dilip Kumar, not easily recognizable in a non-typical headgear, bushy eyebrows and a thick moustache. The other dancers in the group are also the same. The singing voices are also the same, those of Mukesh and Shamshad Begum.

There is an interesting scenario as far as the expressions in the song are concerned. In both duets, the verses are a conversation between two lovers. The male portion of the song is performed by Dilip Kumar, and that is understandable. However, in both songs, the female portion is sung by the lead dancer. And yet, the expressions are as if she is singing proxy for Kamini Kaushal. Dilip Kumar is expressing his point of view, and the female dancer is responding to it, as if on behalf of Kamini Kaushal. In this song, it is the male singer who is presenting a complaint, and the female singer is responding with an expression of her plight, which so clearly seems to be coming from the mind of Kamini Kaushal.

The film ‘Shabnam’ is from the banner of Filmistan Studios, and is directed by B Mitra. The star cast includes Dilip Kumar, Kamini Kaushal, Jeevan, Paro, Mubarak, Harun, Rajendra Singh, Shyama, Kukku. There are 10 songs in this film, all created by the lyricist composer pair of Qamar Jalaalabaadi and Sachin Dev Burman.

Listen to this wonderful Mukesh – Shamshad Begum duet, the fourth song in the film that carries the voice of Mukesh. This post brings the tally of Mukesh songs from 1949 to 27 on this blog. That leaves three more to be discussed, and thankfully, all three are available. We shall soon close the year 1949 with all Mukesh songs posted. And I am still awaiting the appearance of the earlier three songs from 1947 and 1948, that are not yet available for posting online. The search continues. 🙂

Lyrics

tu mahal mein rehni waali
main kutiyaa mein rehne waala
phir tera mera pyaar kya

tu aasmaan ka taaraa aa aa aa aa aa

main ik zarraa bechaara
bataa phir tera mera pyaar kya
phir tera mera pyaar kya

ho o o o o
mere dil mein pyaar ki aag piyaa haaye
lagi rahi
mere dil mein pyaar ki aag piyaa
haay lagi rahi
lagi rahi
lagi rahi
main khol ke khidki mahal ki haaye re
khadi rahi
khadi rahi
khadi rahi

tu hansti khadi us paar
tu hansti khadi us paar
meri naao beech manjdhaar
bataa phir tera mera pyaar kya
phir tera mera
phir tera mera pyaar kya

ho o o o o o
teri meethi meethi yaad
mere dil mein
haaye haaye
aati rahi
aati rahi
aati rahi
meri bheegi bheegi ankhiyon se nindiyaa
haaye haaye
jaati rahi
jaati rahi
jaati rahi

teri jhoothi hai har baat
teri jhoothi hai har baat
tu chhod gayi mera saath
bataa phir tera mera pyaar kya
phir tera mera
phir tera mera pyaar kya

jab rim jhim rim jhim rim jhim
o jab rim jhim rim jhim barkhaa
haaye haaye
hoti rahi
hoti rahi
hoti rahi
main saawan ke baadlon ke sang sang
haaye re
roti rahi
roti rahi
roti rahi

tu khel samajh kar roti
tu khel samajh kar roti
tere aansoo mahal ke moti
o tere aansoo mahal ke moti
bataa phir tera mera pyaar kya
tu mahal mein rehni waali
main kutiyaa mein rehne waala
phir tera mera pyaar kya
phir tera mera pyaar kya

Thanks Sudhir ji. If my father was around, he would have loved this series, him being a big Mukesh fan :).

Atul Ji, Sudhir Ji, there seems to be only one more song left from the movie Shabnam (1949) to be discussed now.. Qadar Meri Na Jaani sung by Shamshad Begum and I guess picturised on Cuckoo.
