Today (23 september) is the death anniversary of Rajinder Krishan, an underestimated lyricist but who in reality dominated lyrics writing during the golden era of Hindi movie music. Among all the lyricists figuring in this blog, Rajinder Krishan has the second highest number of songs (554), behind Majrooh Sultanpuri (582).

“Jugnu” (1947) was a major Hindi movie in many ways. It was Noorjehaan’s last Hindi movie. It was this movie which gave us Dilip Kumar, who till then was a struggler. Noorjahaan acting opposite Dilip Kumar gave Dilip Kumar’s career a big fillip and he never looked back since.

Today (21 september) is the birth anniversary of Allah Wasai, popularly known as Noorjehaan (21 september 1926- 23 december 2000). She bagan her career in early 1940s as a child artist and soon graduated into adult roles as an actor-singer. She was at her peak when partition happened and she went to Pakistan, leaving the field of the leading female playback singing of Hindi movies up for grabs.

It was many years ago; as a child I saw the song “Dil Jalta Ha To Jalne De”(‘Pehli Nazar’, 1945) as one of the songs in a Chitrahaar program on Doordarshan. At that time, I had no idea about the actors present on the screen during this song. The image of Motilal that I would later remember and carry with me for a long time, would be the balding, and somewhat comical man from films like ‘Mr. Sampat’ (1952) and ‘Jaagte Raho’ (1956). And it was much later that I would become aware that the young man in this song, with a moustache and a head of full hair is none other than the same Motilal. However, on the first viewing of this song on TV, it was the charming face of the lady love, that enamored me, and the image of that open expression on her face, with expectation and waiting written on it, still remains with me as one the most endearing images of a lady actor on screen.

“Aas” (1953), not to be confused with “Aah” (1953), was a Goel Cine Corporation movie. It was produced and directed by Devendra Goel. The movie had Kamini Kaushal, Shekher, Om Prakash, Gulab, Chanda Bai, Master Ramesh Kapoor, S. K. Prem, Krishna Mukut, Laxmi Bai, Pratibha Rele, Vishnu Mehrotra, Baby Ya Ya etc in it.

“Achhoot Kanya” (1936) was a Bombay Talkies production. It was produced by Himanshu Rai and directed by Franz Osten. The movie had Ashok Kumar and Devika Rani in lead roles with P F Pithawala, Kamta Prasad, Kishori Lal, Kusum Kumari, Pramila, Anwari, Ishrat etc also there in the movie.
