I have been posting songs from “Anmol Ghadi” (1946) these days. So far, all the songs posted by me (all 8 of them) have been centred around Noorjahaan and Surendra, but this movie als had Suraiyya in it. And naturally, she too sang songs in this movie.

“Anmol Ghadi” (1946) was the biggest hit of the year 1946 and this movie in fact must be regarded as a landmark movie in the Hindi movie industry. The movie had Noorjehaan, Surendra and Suraiyya in lead roles. These three in fact sang their own songs. There was no dearth of songs in this movie. There were as many as 12 songs in it and they all became very popular.

I had never heard of this movie called “Poonam” (1952). Now I have found that it was a movie starring Ashok Kumar, Kamini Kausal, Asha Mathur etc.

In Indian history/mythology/ folk tales, we have been handed down a few love stories, viz “Shirin Farhad”, “Sohni-Mahiwaal”,”Laila-Majnu” etc. All these love stories have one thing in common. And it is the tragic nature of these stories. And that is to be expected seeing that the ground reality in Indian culture does not allow people of opposite genders to openly interacts and fall in love with each other.

When one speaks of a movie called “Parichay”, one means “Parichay” (1972) starring Jeetendra and Jaya Bhaduri. But there was another movie of the same name in 1954. This forgotten movie had actors like Abhi Bhattacharya, Pranoti Ghosh, Shashikala etc in this movie.

While posting songs from “Bandini” (1963), I had mentioned that even the “lesser” songs from this movie were gems. This movie has absolutely wonderful songs sung by Lata, Mukesh, S D Burman, Asha Bhonsle etc.
