When I was a young kid, I was into new songs (which meant songs of 1970s) and I disliked listening to old songs. I wondered why the older singers could not sing songs like the newer songs, and why the music of these two songs were not jazzy like the new songs.

In the late 1940s/early 1950s, South Indian production houses began making films in Hindi. AVM Productions became very well-known with their runaway hit, Bahar in 1951. This was based on a superhit Tamil film and was the movie that launched Vyjanthimala in Hindi movies.

It may be unimaginable today for the present generation, but when India became independent over six decades ago, the country was industrially undeveloped and there was hardly any infrastructure to speak of. Indian leadership of that time decided that India needed to adopt the Soviet Union model of planned economy for nation building. Accordingly, there used to be five year plans those days and based on the decisions taken for these five year plans, various infrastructure projects were undertaken.

“Jeewan Jyoti” (1953) is a movie that had Shammi Kapoor, Chand Usmani, Shashikala etc in it. Personally I am not much aware of this movie. In fact, I am not much aware of its songs too. Or so I thought. Just a few hours ago, I stumbled upon this song, which I had heard many a times without being aware of its details. This time I realised that this song was from “Jeewan Jyoti” (1953). In fact, I thought that this song, which is fairly well known, was already in this blog. But I was wrong in my assumption, of course.

For a Bollywood old-song buff like me, one of the biggest pleasures of checking out youtube is to discover new “old” songs. Over the years I have not just listened to hundreds of songs that I already knew but have discovered several new “old” songs that have absolutely delighted me. The “suggestions” feature on youtube ensures that I spend several unintended hours listening to songs.
