on:“Jeewan Jyoti” (1953) is a movie that had Shammi Kapoor, Chand Usmani, Shashikala etc in it. Personally I am not much aware of this movie. In fact, I am not much aware of its songs too. Or so I thought. Just a few hours ago, I stumbled upon this song, which I had heard many a times without being aware of its details. This time I realised that this song was from “Jeewan Jyoti” (1953). In fact, I thought that this song, which is fairly well known, was already in this blog. But I was wrong in my assumption, of course.
This lively dance song is sung by Geeta Dutt and Rafi. It is performed on the screen as a roadside dance, with watchers gathering around the performers. Shammi Kapoor watches from his home’s balcony and recalls his days with his estranged wife Chand Usmani.
The female performer is Rekha (a well known Marathi movie artist of those days). I am not aware who the male artist lip syncing in Rafi’s voice is. I request my knowledgeable readers to throw light on his identity.
Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist and S D Burman composed the music.
This song is a memorable and enjoyable song indeed. The song becomes more enjoyable now that I have been able to find most of the details about this song.

Lyrics
ho ho ho
lag gayin ankhiyaan tum se mori
haay
lag gayin ankhiyaan tum se mori
lag gayin ankhiyaan
o more baalam
o more sanam
o more saajan tumse mori
lag gayin ankhiyaan
haay raam
sharm khoyi gayi
laaj khoyi gayi
haay haay haay raam haay raam haay raam
main to duniyaa se hi aaj khoyi gayi
sharm khoyi gayi
laaj khoyi gayi
main to duniyaa se hi aaj khoyi gayi
ahaa haa haa haa haa haa
ye kahaani nayi
zaraa sun lo bhai
o saari duniyaa se hi ye to khoyi gayi
par kisliye
o lag gayin ankhiyaan
o more baalam
o more sanam
o more saajan
tumse mori
lag gayin ankhiyaan
haay raam
aaj meri nazar ko chamak mil gayi
oh ho ho ho ho ho ho
o dil ko ik meethi meethi kasak mil gayi
o kasak mil gayi
o more baalam
o more sanam
o more saajan tumse mori
lag gayin
lag gayin ankhiyaan tumse mori
man ke taaron mein lahraayi masti ki dhun
anginat paayalen baj uthin chhun chhunan chhun chhunan
man ke taaron mein laharaayi masti ki dhun
anginat paayalen baj uthin chhun chhunan
o more baalam
o more sanam
o more saajan
tumse mori
lag gayin ankhiyaan
haay raam
lag gayin ankhiyaan
lag gayin ankhiyaan
lag gayin ankhiyaan

This movie was received well. I saw it in my student days. Mainly because of the popular song so ja re so ja meri ankhiyon ke tare mere rajdulare by Geetadutt who was using her full name then Geeta Ghosh Roychowdhuri. It was considered one of the best lories in any film. Chand Usmani acted very well but she had a bit more of Meena Kumari in her and gradually faded out. This was also Shammi’s debut film. Narendra Sharma claimed to have written two songs in this movie on the invitation of Sahir Ludhianvi who wrote all the songs. His name as a co-lyricist appears everywhere. One of the two is ‘dekho dekho nazar lag jaye na’. I have been looking for the other song which is evading me. It cannot be ruled out that it might have been dropped from the film at the last moment. Can any knowledgeable friend throw any light on it?
