“Bandish” (1980) was a movie starring Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini. This was a Rajesh Khanna movie in his second phase as an actor after he had lost his superstardom. He tried very hard to regain his superstardom, but it was too late for him by that time. Typically his stellar performance in these movies would meet wit lukewarm response from movie goers. It was in such stark contrast to the response of public in his superstardom days when his appearance in the credits of a movie was all that was needed to bring in the crowds.

Like any young pre teen kid growing up in late 1960s and early 1970s, I was learning new things every day. I would listen to songs blaring from loudspeakers and from radios. It was one fine evening in 1960s that I heard a song coming out from the radio. I had never heard this song before, and I loved the song instantly and unconditionally, as kids tend to do.

Kishore Kumar, who made his debut as a playback singer in 1948 remained on the fringes for the first two decades of his singing career. It was in 1968 that he burst into the Hindi playback scene like a Tsunami that swept away everything in its wake.

There have been many very good ones but as we know, not all good songs end up being popular with the masses. One need look no further than many of Manna Dey’s songs which were of extremely high quality but whose popularity was largely limited to the classes, not the masses.

The first Rajesh Khanna movie I remember watching in my life is Kati Patang. By then his star was on the rise and this movie, blockbuster that it turned out to be, only further confirmed this state of affairs.

This is one of those songs that I liked a lot in my younger days without having any inkling about the details of the song, and after some time, such songs would be forgotten by one and all for all time to come.

When I was young, I loved making records- no, not the kind of records that played on record players, but the kind which gave you gloating rights. For instance, there were people who would have the record of watching every movie on the first day, first show, and there were some people who would boast of watching the same movie 100 times.
