Mukesh and his Composers – 27

My apologies are in order but then, I can explain. Or so it seems.

In my recent post “Honee Rahe Ho Kar” on Mukesh’s association with composer Surinder Kohli, I had said that it was the only song sung by Mukesh under his composition. Recently, I found myself looking at this name for one more film. But then he is paired up with another composer called Gurubachan.

In this article, I am taking up a rare song from ‘Sharaarat’ (1944) which I had uploaded on one of the video sharing platforms about 6 years back for covering on the Blog. However, it got delayed because I was not sure of the playback singer of the song. In the milieu, I completely forgot to follow it up. A few days back, I heard this song on the website which reminded me of a long pending post which I am taking up.

Today’s song is a bhajan from an obscure film ‘Mali’ (1944), which makes its Debut here.

The film is about a Marathi Sant SAVTA MALI, who is not known much outside Maharashtra. He was one of the saints during the Bhakti Movement in India. The film was made by Rajkamal Chitra, as a bilingual film. In Marathi it was titled ‘Bhakticha Mala’ (‘भक्तीचा मळा’) and in Hindi it was ‘Mali’ (‘माली’). It was directed by V Shantaram.

Today’s song is a traditional bhajan from a Mythological film Shabri-1947.

This was a Mythological film, the story of which we all know since our childhood. This was a film made in Calcutta by Rajeshwari Kala Mandir. The film was directed by R.C.Deepak. He seems to be a “One film wonder” in direction. Lyricists names are not mentioned in HFGK or internet. The Music Director was Pt. Ganapat Rao. There are 12 songs, but details of only 3 songs (including one two sided song sung by Jaganmoy Mitra aka Jagmohan Sursagar) are available. The cast of the film was Molina, Gopal Mehra, Biman Banerjee, Kishore, Premkumari, Beena, Preetidhara and Sunder singh. All these, except Sunder, look like Bangla artistes, for whom information is difficult to collate, barring Molina.

When we discuss songs of 1930s and 1940s, we tend to think that those days that are now 80 to 90 years behind us were similar to present days, as far as listening to songs was concerned. This assumption is highly incorrect. Today everyone is able to listen to any song that is available online. Those days technology was far less advanced. Forget internet, even Radio and TV were in their infancy. Record players and movies were the only means to listening to songs. Record players were very expensive. Only rich people could afford them. Even Radio was expensive. Even if Radio was there, there were very few Radio stations that played film songs. For majority of people, visiting movie halls may have been the only way they would be ale to listen to a song. If the movie was a hit movie, then getting entry into the movie hall was a tall order. One needed to brave big crowd and somehow jostle one’s way to the ticket counter and shove one’s hand, with money in it, inside the round counter measuring less than six inch in diameter and tell the counter clerk how many ticket you required.
