Mukesh and his Composers – 27
My apologies are in order but then, I can explain. Or so it seems.
In my recent post “Honee Rahe Ho Kar” on Mukesh’s association with composer Surinder Kohli, I had said that it was the only song sung by Mukesh under his composition. Recently, I found myself looking at this name for one more film. But then he is paired up with another composer called Gurubachan.
And, to add to my ignorance, these two names are listed separately in the latest version of Mukesh Geet Kosh under the music director’s index. One is listed under Surinder Kohli’s name for the unreleased film ‘The Revenger’ (1970s UR) which we have already covered. Another is listed under S Kohli along with Gurubachan for the film ‘Farz aur Pyar’ of 1981. Thus, I ended up citing only one song of Mukesh under composer Surinder Kohli and technically, I was not wrong. Well, read on.
The Polydor EP cover of Farz aur Pyar has 4 songs. Two solos by Vani Jairam, one duet by Surinder Kohli and Raj Farida and one solo by Mukesh. Only Mukesh’s solo in the EP disc is composed by the duo Surinder Kohli-Gurubachan. The rest of the 3 songs are composed by Surinder Kohli in his individual capacity. Further, HFGK lists another 3 songs in the film. One solo each by Mahendra Kapoor and Asha Bhosle and one duet by Rafi Saab and Asha Bhosle. HFGK further states that only the Mukesh solo and the duet of Rafi Saab and Asha Bhosle were composed by the duo.
The movie has a long list of actors such as Bharat Bhushan, Anjana, Satish Arora, Jagdeep, Mehmood Junior, Rita Anchan, Chandrashekhar and many others. It was produced by RKP films, Mumbai. The director of the film was Sudarshan Sharma who was also one of the main lyricist in the film. The producer was Roger D’Mello.
All this confusion galore seems to be justified if we look at the release date which was 5 years after Mukesh passed away in 1976. Along with the apology, I am taking advantage of this confusion and characterizing this song under a separate composer Surinder Kohli-Gurubachan. I hope I am pardoned and considered justified in my approach. 🙂
Coming to the song itself, Mukesh is in his usual best. The voice captivates the mind and lingers for a long while. This does not seem to be unheard or a rare song, but then it’s relatively less heard. What is unheard is probably the short second part of the same song.
I am sure this film has a long and interesting tales of its making. When I referred this film to our Sudhir ji, he immediately replied that he has a copy of it. With such an instant recall, he must be in the know-how of many other aspects of this film. I request him to write more on this film. To me, what matters most is bringing to the fore the magical voice of Mukesh in as many songs that are available out there on the net.
I thank our Avinash ji in providing me more details of the film. He is another strong contender to pick up a song from the film. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the noble uploaders of the songs on the net.
So, as we continue to add more songs of Mukesh in his birth centenary year, lets enjoy the legendary voice in a relatively less heard song.
