The Voice of Mukesh #29

The tapestry of the fables of love is never compete without the legendary saga of the flame and the moth – much better represented in the Urdu zubaan as Shama aur Parwaana. Somehow, the English equivalents of some of the more profound words and concepts in Hindi and Urdu, simply do not carry the same weight and substance. The English equivalents are a poor excuse to express that which is alien to that language. Shama and Parwaana are an example of such translation dilemmas. There seems to be no adequately authoritative word in the English language to convey the same sentiments in totality.

Without detracting one bit from her merit, capability and musico-longevity, I have to admit that I am not a fan of Asha Bhosle in the same manner as I am of Lataji. That said, there are quite a few of Ashaji’s evergreens – some of them lesser known than her racy raunchy numbers – which touch me more or less the same as some of Lataji’s best.

Given that during most of the 50s, C Ramchandra was very favorably inclined towards Lata, I was just wanting to find out what is the earliest that he had used the voice of Asha Bhosle. I did a quick scan of the films for which C Ram has composed music, in the Geet Kosh, from 1950 onwards. And unless I made a mistake in my scanning, the film ‘Meenaar’ in 1954 seems to be the first time that Asha Bhosle has sung for C Ramchandra. If not mistaken, then this is likely the first such occasion.

Something providential in the coincident that today is the birth anniversary of two wonderful dancers and performers of the Hindi silver screen. Yes, today, 21st October is the day that both Shammi Kapoor and Helen share as their date of birth. And not that it is a strange or unique occurrence. Many people share their dates of birth with many other known, even renowned people. But I single out this occurrence as special – these two wonderful people have been contemporaries in the film industry, they have performed together in many movies, and the most important, both of them represent that combination of energy and fun and delight and enjoyment that is unique to their theatrical personae.

The year is probably 1932-33; and the location is Calcutta. Kidar Sharma, a very young and talented poet and writer from Amritsar, about 23 or 24 years of age, is eagerly trying to get a break into the world of cinema. The film Rajraani Meera is under production at New Theatres, and the star cast boasts of such luminaries as Prithviraj Kapoor, Durga Khote and KL Saigal. (Although these became household names a few years hence, in those fledgling years, all these stars were new and still trying to find their feet in the industry).Kidar Sharma writes in his memoirs about his first meeting with all three of them on a single fateful day, as he is trying for an introduction to the powers that be in New Theatres.

People may be aware of a movie called “Zameen Aasmaan”(1984) and even “Zameen Aasmaan” (1972), but there was another movie of this name as far back as 1946. This movie “Zameen Aasmaan” (1946) has been forgotten and its music is just as obscure. Just now I accidently came across a song from this movie. and what a wonderful discovery it is ! This song, which I would have dismissed as “boring” in my younger days in 1970s is something that I would now go miles to listen to. What a divine composition it is !
