LOST AND FOUND-GEMS FROM UNRELEASED FILMS… Song No. 6
——————————————————–
” Necessity is the mother of Invention “. For a long time, I took this saying at its face value. Later, however, I was thinking how this ” Necessity ” comes in our life ? I am of the opinion that things of Utility and Convenience create their own necessity for the Human race.

LOST AND FOUND-GEMS FROM UNRELEASED FILMS….Song No. 5
———————————————————–
I have been seeing films and listening to film songs from a very young age,for which I used to get reprimands frequently. I had a habit of noting down everything I felt was important in my life. This also included information and comments on films seen in those days.As I grew up and made extra efforts( like bunking school/college etc) to see old movies. I had an attraction-cum-curiosity about the old films, actors, songs etc. Due to this i was called ‘ The grand old man ‘ at a very young age ! This habit of writing about films continued till the 60s when I decided to concentrate on my Career. I had a heap of notebooks, diaries, and make do exercise books made out of blank pages from old exercise books of past academic years.During my transfers in the job, many were lost, some were left behind and the rest were carried to next destination, despite stiff opposition from you know who.

LOST AND FOUND- GEMS FROM UNRELEASED FILMS….song No.4
——————————————————–
As said earlier, Hindi film industry is like an ocean. From 1931 till today, thousands of people must have worked in it. One estimate says, from 1931 to 2000, some 7000 actors alone have worked in Talkie films, not counting other categories of artists. Almost 12000 censored films were made. All this is fine, except that no historical records have been kept about the films or its music. Due to this, many controversies have cropped up about actors/singers/songs mainly. Those people who dig up old documents, secure interviews of old artistes and record these for future references are doing a pioneering work. Those who write books, at times do not care to cross check the information they provide in their books, thereby inviting controversies.

LOST AND FOUND-GEMS FROM UNRELEASED FILMS…..Song No. 3

Writing on old film songs and that too on unreleased film songs is a very hard job. Firstly, hardly any information is available on Internet or in books. Secondly, controversies crop up on the statements made in the write up. India being notoriously hopeless as far as recording history of films, music or songs is concerned, it is extremely difficult to arrive at a definite and undisputable conclusion. Most artistes of those times are beyond our reach and if anyone is still alive, he may not remember the facts properly due to old age. In my work in this field, I have found that old age artistes either don’t remember or believe firmly in wrong/desired events and timings making a mess of the whole information.

LOST AND FOUND- GEMS FROM UNRELEASED FILMS….Song No. 2
————————————————————-
When we say ‘Unreleased’ film, it includes films which remained incomplete, films which did not reach the stage of getting censored and films which got censored but were not released in Theatres. To get songs from such films is a difficult task. Luckily, there are some generous minded Record Collectors in India (shri Giridharilal ji Vishwakarma ji) and Pakistan (Janab Shalin Bhatt ji),who upload some gems from unreleased films.

LOST AND FOUND-GEMS FROM UNRELEASED FILMS……Song No. 1
———————————————————-
From 1931 to 2010, a total of 11,150 Talkie films were censored. Once the film gets censored, it is free to be released. However,no one really knows how many films do not reach even the censors. I mean, films get started with very good intentions, but one can not predict whether the film will be completed, censored and released. There are several films which do not reach the theatres.

Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 21
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
(1970s Unreleased – Solo)
Ah yes, I am sure you would have guessed it already. When I wrote yesterday that the series is not yet complete, and given that all years in the decade are covered, then what is left are the unreleased songs from this decade. Films that got planned, music and songs got arranged and recorded, but the films either did not get made, were abandoned, or were not released, for various reasons. And as experience has told us time and again, such unreleased songs are a fabulous treasure by themselves. They form a very interesting category, in that the songs have been created, recorded and also released, sometimes formally and sometimes informally. They are away from the mainstream attention, since the films never came to the theatres, and their familiarity in the minds of general public is low. Most of these unreleased songs were first heard on radio, occasionally. They have remained in memory, albeit without any memory of information about them. Sometimes, they are also mislabeled in the mind’s catalog as non-film songs. Simply because they are not associated with any familiar or even obscure film names.
And so, the last two offerings of this series are two very fabulous songs from unreleased films from the decade of 1970. As I am sifting through the list of unreleased films in Geet Kosh, and in the song folders of unreleased films in my collection, I find such a huge treasures of absolute gems of top quality that have been recorded, but never came into the mainstream broadcast or record sales. Blissfully, they are available. Once again, I am spoilt for choices, even with the comparatively smaller sample size in this category, and finding it difficult to choose one. But I have to. And for the solo, I have chosen this wonderful poetical gem from the unreleased film ‘Insaan Aur Insaan’.

There are hundreds of gems of hindi film songs which I have not heard yet. I am talking about only the songs of Mohammad Rafi sahab here. It is obvious nobody can claim to have heard all the songs which include scores of wonderful songs of the golden era.

June 30th is the date of the publication of Saratchandra Chaterjee’s famous novel Devdas. It was published in 1917, thus we celebrated its 97th birthday on 30 june this year (2014). Devdas has, like no other novel before it or after, captured the imagination of film-makers in India. According to Wikipedia, there have been 16 films based on this story. Two of them have been made in Pakistan and Bangladesh each.

“Ladaaki” was a Roop K Shorey movie that was begun sometime in 1950s. A few songs were recorded for the movie and then the project was shelved.
