‘Naya Bakra’ (1979) was produced and directed by K Babuji who also wrote the story and composed the songs of the film. The cast included Vinod Mehra, Chandralekha Mukherjee, Mehmood, Jagdeep, Paintal, Mukri, Helen, Utpal Dutt, Dev Kumar, Azad, Maruti, Bhagwan, Birbal, Raj Kishore etc. The highlight of the film was that there were some of the top stars of 1970s such as Jitendra, Rajesh Khanna, Rekha and Reena Roy who made their special appearances.
The film was certified sometime early 1979. Unfortunately, the film is not available on any video sharing platform nor on the OTT. Even the synopsis of the film’s story is not available. It is doubtful whether the film had theatrical release and if yes, it may be a limited one. The video clips of four songs that are available on the video sharing platform suggest that the film may be available on the VHS tape privately.
From the title of the film supplemented by the video clips of the song, I can visualised that the film belongs to the comedy genre. A few actors roles in the film have been indicated in cast list on IMDb – like Mehmood as the music director, Jagdeep as the film producer, Mukri as a spot boy, Helen as a dancer who rehearses her dance steps on the Carnatic music composed by Mehmood. So, there seems to be an important sub-plot of film making in the film’s story.
The top actors who makes special appearances in the film – Reena Roy with Rajesh Khanna and Rekha with Jitendra are the parts of two separate mujra songs, suggesting some criminal angles. The title of the film, ‘Naya Bakra’ which colloquially translates in English as a new guy who is gullible to be easily fooled. In one of a very short clip from the film, Vinod Mehra is seen fighting with some criminals, probaby pointing towards criminals trying to make Vinod Mehra a ‘naya bakra’.
The producer-director-writer-music director of the film, K Babuji seems to be almost unknown personality on the website except that he was the music director of two other Hindi films – ‘Jaayen To Jaayen Kahaan’ (1976), probably an unreleased film and ‘Parmatama’ (1976). He is also supposed to have been associated with a couple of Tamil films as music director.
The film’s audio songs were released in 1977 on LP gramophone record which had seven songs written by Anjaan and set to music by K Babuji. The film makes a debut on the Blog with its first song, ‘aap se dil mila ho aap ka ho gaya’ which is rendered by Kishore Kumar singing for Vinod Mehra and Asha Bhosle singing for an actress who I guess is Chandralekha Mukherjee (she appeaers to be the same actress who had worked in a supporting role in the Bengali film, ‘Sudur Niharike’ (1976). The context of the song is not known. But the lyrics of the song indicates that the lead pair has developed liking for each other and vow to be with each other throughout their life.
On the LP cover of of the film’s songs, an actress is seen with Vinod Mehra. The other prominent female actors in the film are, Helen, Rekha and Reena Roy whose faces are familiar to me. Hence, by process of elimination, the actress seen with Vinod Mehra on the LP Cover is Chandralekha Mukherjee. Incidentally, there is another Mumbai-based Chandralekha Mukherjee who is mainly a TV actress. But she was not born when ‘Naya Bakra’ (1979) was being made.
