Today, January 28, 2026, is the 89th birthday of playback singer, Suman Kalyanpur whose career growth got stunted because she remained under the shadow of a ‘banyan tree’ called Lata Mangeshkar. Sometime, having a voice quality too close to that of the top most playback singer of the film industry becomes a bane.
Suman Kalyanpur was born in Dhaka (now in Bangla Desh) as Suman Hemmadi when her father was working in Central Bank of India, Dhaka. The family belonged to Hemmadi village in Kundapura taluka, now in Udupi district of Karnataka. The family shifted from Dhaka to Mumbai in 1943 on her father’s transfer. Suman Kalyanpur was interested in singing and painting. After passing her Matriculation exam from St Columbia High School, she joined Sir J J School of Arts with Painting as the main subject. Simultaneously, she started her musical training under Keshavrao Bhole and later Ustad Khan Abdul Rehman Khan. She started singing on All India Radio in 1952. She got her first playback singing opportunity for a Marathi film, ‘Shukrachi Chaandni’ (1953).

“Sher Afghan-1966” was directed by B.R. Jhingan for ‘Shankar Movietone, Bombay’. It had Prithviraj, Nishi, Premnath, Suresh, Hiralal, Maruti, Ulhas, Zeb Rahman and others. HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970) lists six songs for this movie leaving a space indicating possibility of more songs might have recorded for this movie. Lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri wrote all the songs for this movie. And music for this movie was composed by Husnlal-Bhagatram.

‘Khuda Kasam’ (1981) was produced by Baldev Pushkarna and was directed by Lekh Tandon who also wrote the story. The cast included Vinod Khanna, Tina Munim, Ajit, Pran, Nazneen, Zahira, Kamini Kaushal, Madan Puri, Jalal Agha, Surendra Pal, Shakti Kapoor, Chandrashekhar, C S Dubey, Pinchoo Kapoor, Ram Mohan, Brahm Bhardwaj, Leena Das, Ranbir Raj, Ratna, Colonel Kapoor etc. Dharmendra made a special appearance. The film was delayed as Vinod Khanna had temporarily shifted to the USA to work in the ashram of his spiritual guru, Osho. He did return to India to complete his films before moving back to the ashram in the USA in 1982.

Today’s song is a special song from a Muslim Social film – Darwaza-1954.
The film was produced by the famous writer of Urdu, Ismat Chugtai (21-8-1915 to 24-10-1991). She was the wife of this film’s director Shahid Lateef (11-6-1913 to 16-4-1967). His famous films were Naya Sansar-41, Jhoola-41, Anjaan-41, Ziddi-48, Arzoo-50, Fareb-53, Darwaza-54, Sone ki chidiya-58 and Baharen phir bhi aayengi-66. This pair of story writer, screenplay writer and producer- Ismat Chugtai and director Shahid Lateef worked in many films, including today’s film Darwaza-1954. The banner was Film India Corporation, Bombay. Music for this film was by Nashaad.
Film Darwaza-1954, true to its name, was the entry door for many artists. Singers Suman Kalyanpur and Sabita Bannerjee debuted as Hindi film singers with this film. Lyricist Khumar Barabankvi also debuted as a Lyricist with this film. The cast of the film was Shyama, Shekhar, Nazir Hussain, Leela Mishra, Neelam, Kumkum, Altaf (husband of Khurshid Jr, actress and singer as well as sister of Meena Kumari). Master Romi was a Guest artist.

And they include Suman Kalyanpur and Subir Sen; with Suman Kalyanpur having three solos and one solo by Subir Sen. Music for this movie was composed by S.N. Tripathi. Out of the six songs in the movie two have been identified as penned by lyricist B.D. Mishra.

Today’s song is from an unreleased movie ‘Bhool Na Jaanaa-1970’. Music for this movie was composed by Daan Singh. In Geet Kosh the banner of this movie is mentioned as Integrity International. There is no information about the director of this movie or its cast. But luckily there is detailed information about its songs which is that this movie has seven songs. Geet Kosh leaves a space with dots assuming that there would have been more songs for this movie but which are not known and neither available I guess. This movie had made its debut on this blog on 24.09.2010 where in our editor Atul jee had posted the first song from this movie. Thereafter five more songs from this movie have been covered on this blog taking the tally of the songs of this movie to six.
