As a music director, N Dutta worked for films that are a mix of A grade and B/C grade films. He did have some films associated with big name banners. Especially, he worked for BR Films for the movies Saadhna (1958), Dhool Ka Phool (1959) and Dharamputra (1961). Each of these films is a musical bonanza and boasts of a string of wonderful hits. Four songs of the 1958 film ‘Saadhna’ are already posted on this blog. This is the 5th gem from this film.

As I encounter more songs, heard and unheard, composed by N Dutta, I find that Asha Bhosle is the singer who has apparently sung most of his songs (with female voice). Here is a lovely melody from an obscure film, ‘Mohini’ (1957). In this film, of the 9 songs, six are sung by Asha ji.

‘Khaakaan’ from 1965 is a film I have never heard about before. Given the star cast, with Dara Singh in the lead, it definitely must have been a B grade costume action drama, that probably would have made the rounds of the B cinema circuit, and then went away. This is a song that I have heard on the radio many many years ago, and its melody and memories have remained with me all these years, without really knowing anything about its antecedents. Recently, I discovered this song on YouTube once again, and then found out more about the film and the song itself.

So I come across this foot tapping melody by Rafi Saab, and as I start looking for details, up comes the name of the picture – “Miss ‘58”. First reaction is ‘wow, ok’. But then, thinking of the film “Mr and Mrs ‘55”, well why not “Miss ‘58”. Then a little more browsing on the blog reveals that there are already six films represented here whose names start with ‘Miss. . .’. and eight films starting with ‘Mr. . .’, and of course ‘Mr and Mrs 55’. And a cursory browse through the list of films from other sources, shows that there still are more films starting with ‘Miss’ and ‘Mr’ that are awaiting entry on this website.

A film with the name ‘Baadshah’ was released in 1954, with music by Shankar Jaikishan. Three songs from this film are already posted on this blog. And then, in 1964, there is another film released by the same name. Produced under the banner of Navkala Niketan, the film is directed by Chandrakant Gaur. The lyrics are from the pen of Anand Bakshi, and the music compositions are by N Dutta. Thanks to Arun ji for prodding the memory cells. Here is another wonderful melody from the film ‘Light House’ (1958). This time around, it is a song of exuberance, executed in a very fast tempo. It is the same team that has given two melancholic gems, “Tang Aa Chuke Hain Kashmakash-e-Zindagi Se Hum” and “Kis Jagah Jaayen Kis Ko Dikhlaayen” – lyrics from the pen of Sahir Ludhianvi, music under the stewardship of N Dutta, and the wonderful rendition by Asha Bhosle.

The past decades are a treasure house of musical gems – the more one digs and searches, one finds more new and forgotten melodies that are simply superb musical creations. I know, one of these days, we may come to a point where we have searched and located all the physically existing songs from Hindi films. But I also know, that day is still far off, and we will continue to come up with these discoveries for some more good length of time.
