STREET SINGER (1938) is regarded as one of the three tops films of K L Saigal produced under the banner of New Theaters. If ‘Devdas’ (1935) confirmed the arrival of K L Saigal as an actor-singer, ‘Street Singer’ (1938) and ‘Zindagi’ (1940) made him the first star actor-singer of the Hindi film industry. People used to watch his films more for his songs than for the film itself. The flip side of Saigal’s popularity as a singer was that his songs virtually eclipsed the songs sung by other singers in his films.

“Anaath Ashram” (1937) was a New Theatres production. It was written by Kidar Sharma and directed by Hemchandra Chundar. The movie had Uma Shashi, Najmul Hussain, Jagdish Sethi, Prithviraj Kapoor, Nawaab, Master Satu, Trilok Kapoor, Nemo, Manorama etc in it.

Today (27 november 2013) is the 51st death anniversary of K C Dey (1893- 27 november 1962). He is one of the few artists who achieved a great deal in his life despite the severe handicap of being visually impaired. One needs to take one’s hat off to a man of such talent perseverance and indomitable spirit.

“Laal E Yaman” (1933) was the first movie of JBH Wadia that he produced under his banner of Wadia Movietone. During the making of this movie, he attended a private music concert where he heard a 13 year old kid singing. He gave him the opportunity to sing a song in his movie. He was so pleased with the recording that he asked him to sing more songs in the movie and signed him up as an actor in the movie as well.

The music was by Anupam Ghatak, Lyricists were Zia Sarhadi and Pt.Indra and the cast included Surendra, Maya Banerjee, Bibbo, Yakub, Kayam Ali, Bhudo, Sankatha and other Sagars regulars.
