Today’s duet song is from an obscure film of the mid 50’s – Pensioner-1954.
Having an obscure film in the 50’s is not very common, because in this decade the film industry was taking a new shape and growing very fast. New actors, directors, new themes, new and emerging composers were giving a new hope to the industry. Lilting music and a vast audience encouraged the industry. In such a situation most films had something to offer, hence almost every film was successful. But as is said, success does not come to all just because you are in the group. Films which had nothing to please the audience naturally became flops.

Today’s song is from dubbed Tamil film, titled ” Manohar” in Hindi, in 1954.
After the mind boggling and the most unexpected success of the film Chandralekha-1948 from Gemini Studios, owned by S.S.Vasan, the Southern film industry was shaken. They never imagined that the Hindi belt could be tapped for additional business. The southern film stars, who always harboured a hidden desire to gain name, fame and the consequent money from the Hindi belt which occupied almost 75 to 80 % of All India market, also saw their opportunities in this.

Today’s song is a lovely qawwali from the film Paak Daman-1957. The story of this film seems to be very popular and well known, because I find that several films were made on this one story and with the same title. The first film came in 1931 as Paak Daman. Then came Paak Daman Raqasa-1932, Paak Daman-1940 and Paak Daman-1957. Meanwhile a Pakistani film Paak Daman was also made in 1969.

What is 90? Well, nothing more than a number.
And yes, it is also a milestone in life, that many a blessed people arrive at, and continue to move ahead. It brings up another thought – what is life at 90? No need to elaborate on that one. Yes, we all have seen folks in our families, in friend circles, in the group of acquaintances. Folks who have arrived at the 90th milestone, and continue. Sometimes those impressions are not so palatable. Sometimes the physical bodies, and sometimes even the spirit, is so tenuous and vulnerable. Yes, it is wonder to be at 90, and beyond. Sometimes it is a pleasant wonder, and many a times it is not such a pleasant wonder.

Today’s song is from the Mythological film Laxmi Narayan (1951).
Are you a believer in God ? Well I am. I am a confirmed Theist. I am also a religious person. It is surely not because I have become an old man now, but right from my childhood, I have been a religious person. The atmosphere in our joint family was very conducive to follow the religious path and ways, because of my grandfather and father. Both were experts in Sanskrit. My father had worked as a practicing PANDA (पंडा ) in Kashi (Banares), when he went underground after the Gandhi killing, in 1948-49. So, it is not the case that old age made me Religious like in the proverb ” सौ चूहे खा कर बिल्ली चली हज को ” !
