Today (30 august 2014) is the 91st birth anniversary of Shailendra (30 august 1923- 14 december 1966). When I look at his career as a lyricist, I find that he had a 17 years long career as a lyricist (1949 to 1966). He was at the peak of his prowess when we died at the age of just 43 ! But by that time he had achieved so much in his career that the status of a legend was his for the taking and he is rightfully regarded as one of the colossus among HFM lyricists.

Raag Maalikaa in Hindi Films – 13
======================

In the year 1959 Vijay Bhatt produced, under the banner of ‘Prakash Pictures’, a memorable movie ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnai’, which had music as its main theme. This is the only film in which Shehnai Maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan played his Shehnai. The star cast consisted of Rajendra Kumar, Ameeta, Ullhas, Manmohan Krishna, I S Johar, Anita Guha, Leela Misra, Master Lalit Kumar, Baby Shobha, etc.

“Tin Tin Tin” (1959) was directed by B J Patel for Kirit Films. This obscure B grade movie had Caeser (Dog), Neelofar, Samar Roy, Mirajkar, Habeeb, Rajan Kapoor, Vishwa Mehra, Devchand, Moolchand, Bhudo Advani, Abdul Sattar, Tuntun etc in it.

Seeing that a dog played an important role, I am keen to find out more about this movie. 🙂 Unfortunately the prints of this movie seem to have been lost with the passage of time.

The Many Colors of Love #20 – The Gambles of Love
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

And so wrote the scribe

nainon se jo naina takraaye to
kaun haara aur kaun jeeta

…….
…….
……..
is pyaar ki baazi mein hans kar
jo dil haara wo sab jeeta
jo dil haara wo sab jeeta

And they often say, the matters of heart are a gamble of life. The game of love is very exacting. And the insistence of the game-master is that no wager is big enough in this game of love. The game is played with odds which at times will compel you to bet everything in an all or nothing deal.

This post turns out to be special. Along with the love series special on the ‘Gambles of Love’, we are also making another celebration that combines surprise with anniversary and milestone. Read on, and you will find out.

My first post was about a girl singing about how she is feeling after falling in love. The next post was about the feelings of a girl about to be married. This one is about a girl who is being teased for her strange behavior after falling in love with the eternal one, “Krishna”. Hindi films are mostly about love in different settings, situations. Some probably think that this limits the scope of our films. But I say, why not? We should celebrate the strongest of emotions which is love, isn’t it? The Many Colors of Love #19 – The Quarrels of Love
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

And so wrote the scribe
badi cheez hai pyaar mohabbat
aisi taisi jhagde ki
ho jaaye sarkaar mohabbat
aisi taisi jhagde ki

And why not? Having ‘chaat pakodi’ and ‘bhel puri’ occasionally is a good break from the routine meals at home, day in and day out. And so it is with the ‘jhagda’. Isn’t that a matter of common everyday experience? A lot of love, spiced with the pepper of arguments and squabbles; add to the value of high spirits and breaks the monotony of goody goody goodness. Adds to the tang in life.

It was a message earlier in the morning yesterday. It was a reminder email from Khyati Ben, that 25th July 2014 is the 95th birth anniversary of the renowned music director, Sudhir Phadke. This post is on her request. The wonderful and unique song is also her suggestion, and the lyrics are provided by her.
