The 1960 film ‘Chhabeeli’ is not well remembered or talked about much. It was planned as the launch vehicle for Tanuja, by her mother Shobhna Samarth. Whatever else may have been the performance and success factors of the film otherwise, there is one aspect that is unique and significant about this film. Which also makes one wonder about the peculiarities of the cinema world, and its stereotyping. The film has a very delightfully mesmerizing song – “Ae Mere Hamsafar, Rok Apni Nazar” , which is sung by Nutan herself under the music direction of Snehal Bhatkar. This song, along with another equally mesmerizing duet of Nutan and Hemant Kumar – “Lehron Pe Lehar, Ulfat Hai Jawaan” , make this film and its music worth remembering. Both the music director and the lyricist, a gentleman by the name S Ratan, have excelled in this creating these two songs. And the rendering of these songs by Nutan – ah, that is just a class by itself.

In the matters of heart, when the blossoming emotions of love come to a head, then there comes a day when this precious secret of the lovers comes to be known. Sometimes it is known within a close circle, and sometimes it comes to the lips of all and sundry. A matter that was securely hidden in the two hearts now forms the grist for gossip mills. And thus are born the tales of love.

One of my pet grouses against Hindi movies is that they do not lay stress on working for a living. Hindi movies show people either romancing their beloved or singing sad songs when separated by the beloved. And those who do not indulge in such activities are shown remonstrating with the almighty for their misfortune. Hindi movie characters are rarely shown working for their living.

A young sarangiya (sarangi player) from Lahore becomes the sarangi accompanist to some of the female singers such as Inayatbai, Hirabai, Akhtaribai (Begum Akhtar) etc in their concerts in the late 1920s for a living. In such concerts, he also sings thumris composed by his uncle as fillers during breaks.

Nainon se naina milaa ke – Song no. 8
——————————————-
ishq qaatil se bhi, maqtool se hamdardi bhi
ye bata kis se mohabbat ki jazaa maange gaa ?
sajda khaaliq ko bhi, iblees se yaarana bhi
hashr mein kis se aqeedat ka silaa maange gaa ?
(Allama Iqbal)
When in doubt tell the truth. (Mark Twain)
There are innumerable ‘when in doubt…’ quotes out there from ‘when in doubt wear red’ to ‘go public’ to ‘throw it out’. Just to give the briefer ones. There are some sensible ones like ‘do not react’ or ‘sleep over it’. For someone like me fortunate enough to know Urdu, it makes sense to turn to Urdu poetry.
