Kaanchi re Kaanchi re

The songs of “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” (1971) were big rage during their time. One song that was a huge hit with kids like me was this song “Kaanchaa re Kaanchaa re”. Overnight, people with Nepali features began to be called Kaanchaa (males) and Kaanchi (females) respectively. One of my acquaintence kid sang this song “Kaanchi re Kaanchi re” addressed to a Nepali girl,hoping to eve tease her, but the girl, instead of feeling offended, sang back “Kaanchaa re Kaanchaa re” to him. 😉

This is one song about which I had no idea. And like me, most people are ignorant about the existence of this song from an obscure movie called “Do Boond Paani” (1971).

Great songs are not always the preserve of hit movies. I have realised that many great songs were composed for movies that flopped at the box office. The movies were forgotten , but the songs were not.

I had never heard about this movie called “Ek Thi Reeta” (1971). This obscure movie had Vinod Mehra and Tanuja in lead roles.

Ganesh was one music director who got very few opportunities as a music director, and he made the most of these opportunities. But much to his, and our misfortune, many of his songs were forgotten, since the movies were flops. These songs, though very fine songs on their own,are very difficult to come by these days.

“Aap Aaye Bahaar Aayi” (1971) was a musical blockbuster where every song from the movie was extremely popular. In fact these songs remain popular to this day.
