“Elaan” (1947) was one of the major movies of Mehboob Productions and one whose messages are relevant even today. This movie, which was produced and directed by Mehboob Khan had Surendra, Munawwar Sultana, Zebunissa, Agha, Shahnawaz, W. M. “Ham Ek Hain” (1946) as the name suggests, was a movie on the theme of national unity. Durga Khote, in addition to her own biological son, also adopts two more boys and a girl of different religions and communities and brings them up as her own children, while letting them follow their respective religions. And all these children fall in love with persons of the relevant religious faiths and marry them with full parental approval. A very progressive movie indeed.:) Now we know the source of inspiration for Manmohan Desai’s “Amar Akbar Anthony”. 🙂

Today (3 august) is the birth anniversary of Shakeel Badayuni (3 august 1916- 20 april 1970). I had never heard of the film SANYASI (1945) until a few months back. The film was produced under the banner of Kardar Productions and directed by A R Kardar. The cast included Shamim Bano, Amar, Shyam Kumar, Ghulam Mohammed. I checked the available songs on internet and found to my surprise that there were 10 songs in this film out of which 7 songs were sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali (both solo and duets). These songs were written by Pandit Madhur and set to music by Naushad. Other than these, I am not able to get other details about this film such as genre and box office success or otherwise of the film.

“Rattan” (1944) was a movie whose songs were based on folk music instead of classical music as was the norm those days. That helped ordinary folks to identify with and connect with the music of this music. The result was unprecedented. The producer of this movie earned more money through the music rights than through the screening of the movie.

Hansraj Behl made his composing debut in Hindi films, in the year 1946. As per records, his first film released is ‘Pujaari’ (1946). In the same year, two more films were also released with music composed by him. these are ‘Phulwaari’ and ‘Gvaalan’. Rare films in their own rights, and very little is known about them. This delightful song is from the film ‘Gvaalan’, sung by Zohrabai Ambaalewaali (or Zohrabai Ambaalaa).
