Today’s song is from the film Ratnadeep-1952. This is the last song of this film, thus making the film YIPPEED !

In the last 7 songs (today’s song is the 8th song) of this film, almost every aspect of the film, songs and the artists working in it have been discussed. Today we will discuss something which is close to my heart, from this film. Today’s song is sung by one of my favourite singers of Hindi Cinema – GEETA DUTT. Some of our readers must be knowing that there is a site called http://www.geetadutt.com, run by some of her ardent admirers. A few years ago, on their request, I had written an article on Geeta Dutt, on her Death Anniversary, for their site.

#Bhoole-Bisre Geet #

The song in this post is from the movie ‘Rickshaawaalaa-1973’. I have no recollections of having watched this movie earlier. However, since the music of this film is composed by none other than Rahul Dev Burman, I wish to take up the songs from this movie. So far two songs from this movie have already been posted on the blog. The music of this film is very good. But I think it was forgotten easily as the movie itself was not a successful movie of its time. This movie was a remake of a successful Tamil movie “Rickshawkaran”, which starred the superstar of Tamil Cinema M G Ramachandran. The Tamil movie was released on 29 May 1971, and It was a major commercial success, however its remake in Hindi could not achieve the same success and it turned out to be a disaster.

Today’s song is the last song from the film Taqdeer-1943. With this song, the film gets YIPPEED !

Taqdeer-1943 was specially made for facilitating the Debut of Baby Rani aka Baby Fatima aka Nargis, the only daughter of Singer, actress, Director, Producer and Music Director of early Talkie films – Jaddan Bai. Father of Nargis was a Hindu converted to Islam and from being a Muslim, Nargis got converted to Hinduism before her marriage to Sunil Dutt, with a brand new name “Nirmala Dutt”. Thus a circle was completed from her Nani Daleepabai, who hailed from a Brahmin family to Nirmala Dutt – wife of Sunil Dutt, a Mohyal Brahmin (a sub caste of Saraswat Brahmins). It is said that before marrying Mohan Babu (father of Nargis) Jaddan bai also had changed her name to Jaya Devi Tyagi. However due to Muslim community pressure Mohan Babu had to convert to Islam and become Abdul Rashid.

Today’s song is the last song from the film Guru Ghantal-1956.

We got Independence in 1947 and the most delighted industry in India was the Film Industry. The reasons were simple.

Some reasons were….
1. Unjustified restrictions on the storylines were now removed.
2. Stories and songs would be free from any constraints.
3. Raw Film prices would be controlled and its availability assured.
4. No force on making ‘ War Effort’ (propaganda) films anymore.
5. An Independent union of filmmakers, without Government intervention was now possible.
6. More facilities for the industry could be expected. etc etc.

Today’s song is from the film Ratnadeep-1952.

In the early era of Indian Talkie Cinema, the two major centres of film production were Bombay and Calcutta. They had dual responsibility. One, to make films to entertain the local audience and two, to enter the Hindi cinema market spread throughout the Indian subcontinent. Film makers found a way for this. Films were made in two languages simultaneously-the Local language and the Hindi version.

Today’s song is from the film Usha Kiran-1952.

It had been just about 5 years since we got our Independence. The initial rush of Migration of Muslim artistes to Pakistan had slowed down, but it continued in a trickle till about early 1970s. The second line people who filled up these vacancies in the Hindi film industry were getting established by then.

One big issue came up and that was the backing out of those film financiers from film production, who had a lot of Black money made from the war years. It did have an impact on the number of films made, till new financiers showed up.
