Today’s song is from an imaginary costume film ‘Son of Sindbad’ (1958).
Alibaba, Alladin and Sindbad were the popular characters during our school days. Not only books of their stories but also films made on them were the targets of all children in those days. It was a thrilling experience to get a book on one of these Heroes, as a gift on “Happy Birthday” ! I am not very sure if today’s young children read these stories. I doubt if they even know these names. These boys seem to favour Harry Potter stories, while the young girls are lost on reading Mills and Boon novels, I suppose ! The big fat book ‘Stories of Arabian Nights’ was the most sought after book (in spite of 5 copies) in our school library. Stories of Alibaba, Alladin, Sindbad the sailor, Hatimtai, Gul Bakavali etc enchanted us.

‘Mr Yogi’ (1989), directed by Ketan Mehta was one of a few Doordarshan Serials which I had watched its all the 13 episodes when it was telecast. The very first episode set the tone of the serial to be a light comedy and satirical one. It is a story about an NRI from USA, (played by the late Mohan Gokhale) who has come to India to choose a bride for himself. In his quest, he meets 12 girls of 12 different zodiac signs which results in some comical situations. There were a couple of medleys of popular Hindi film songs of 1960s and 70s in this TV serial. In the end, he rejects all the 12 girls but gets hooked to an unknown girl (Subhangi Gokhale, who became Mohan Gokhale’s real wife). The serial was based on a Gujarati novel, ‘Kimball Ravenswood’, written by an American Gujarati, Madhu Rye (real name: Madhusudan Vallabhdas Thaker).

My first introduction to Ajay was way back when. We met at Golcha, one of the (then) premier cinema halls situated in the Daryaganj main shopping area in Delhi. This place is technically in Old Delhi (or Delhi-6, as it is recognized now by film buffs). Golcha used to be what maybe Maratha Mandir used to be in Bombay. People would visit simply to see the place.

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 29
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
This post may likely be the most peculiar one of this series. Here we see a song, or more accurately a song snippet, reused in a most peculiar manner.
The film is ‘Mujhe Jeene Do’ from 1963. Recently, I chanced upon this song snippet, which is part of a song from another film. I have seen this film maybe once or twice earlier, but did not register or remember this song snippet being present in the film. A friend recently brought this to my attention, and I thought of writing this post.

‘Insaaf Kaa Mandir’ (1969) was produced by Sherbahadur Singh and Jagdish Singh and was written and directed by BR Ishara. The cast includes Sanjeev Kumar, Snehlata, Nadira, Asit Sen, Prithvi Raj Kapoor, Tarun Bose, Manmohan Krishna, Sapru, Laxmi Chhaya, Aruna Irani, Bela Bose, Mohan Sherry, Kanu Roy etc. This was BR Ishara’s debut film as a full-fledged director. After coming to Mumbai, it took him almost 2 decades to direct his first film. But it was not that he had run away from his village to Mumbai to make a career in films. It was, what he called the ‘torturous nature’ of his uncle which drove him to Mumbai where he was prepared to grab any work including domestic servant and waiter for sustenance.

Mukesh and his Actors – 01
——————————————-
Well, the Halley’s comet is back on the blog.
So much so that it did not feature in nearly two centuries of latest posts. Reasons? Aren’t they cliches already on the blog?
Incidentally, speaking of the real macro universe comet itself, it last appeared in 1986 and is expected to pass by the pale blue dot next in July 2061. Second week of December this year, it reached the farthest point from the sun known as aphelion, thus beginning its journey towards the inner solar system.
So, the date for sighting arguably the most famous comet is set for July 2061 for earthlings alive then.
Coming back to the blog, we start with a new series Mukesh and his Actors. This has been a task which I had been contemplating for years and remained a non-starter mainly because I could not decide as to which actor, I should take up for the debut post.

Today’s song is from a Costume drama film Naqab-1955.
This was yet another film weaving a beaten-track story of the King – Queen and the evil Vazir. Initially I was quite amused with such stories and was keen to see these films. Slowly and in due course as I expanded my world, I started getting weary of such set stories. The basic plot used to be the same, only the names of places and the characters and actors used to be different. I guess, even the filmmakers got tired with these stories. In reality, the generation which enjoyed such child pleasing stories was receding in the background with the growing age and the next generation was eager to broaden its visions with different Genres of films like Comedy, Real life adventure, Religion, Love stories, Musicals, Historicals and what not !
