Mukesh and his Composers – 43

I return with a second consecutive post on an artist who never scored for a full film as a music director.
But, unlike Vipin Mehra of the previous post, the composer in this post is very well known and continues to perform to this day.

I am using the terms music director, composer quite freely and for artists who never scored for full-fledged films. But then as we read this post, things will be clearer.

Today, we shall discuss composer/musician Kishore Desai’s association with Mukesh. I am spared the exercise of researching on Kishore Desai as Sadanand ji has not only written a well-researched and detailed post on his life and works but also met him in person.

Today’s song is from a Mythological film – Naag Panchami-1953.

What do we know about snakes, in general ? Whenever and wherever a snake is found, the tendency is to kill it. Humans have an inherent fear about snakes. Not all snakes are poisonous or venomous and very few are capable of killing humans with their venoms. Out of all the 3500 known snake species only 20 % are venomous and only 7 % can kill humans, as per a study. Actually, snakes are very useful creatures, particularly for the farmers. They eat rats-who destroy the standing crops and stored grains. Non-Venomous snakes are eaten with relish in China and some other countries in the Far East.

The king of snakes- Vasuki, according to Mythology was born to Sage Kashyap and wife Kadru. Vasuki is considered as the leader of all snakes in the Naag Lok. Vasuki was so long and strong that he was used as a rope for Samudra Manthan by Gods and Asurs. The elder brother of Vasuki-Sheshnag balances the universe on its head He is also used as a bed for Lord Vishnu. The younger brother Vasuki adorns the neck of Lord Shiva.

Today’s song is from a C grade Costume film ‘ Taj aur Talwar’-1956.

1956 was the Silver Jubilee year of Indian Talkie Films. This year, the most successful films were entertainers. There were of course some films carrying social messages. One of them was ‘Jaagte Raho’ (‘Ek Din Ratre’ in Bangla), which tried to bring out the upper middle class hypocrisy in a metro city like Bombay. Initially, the film did not make any ripples, but after it won International awards, it became very popular. (People of other nations have to tell us that our film is good !). A social message, excellent music and solid story – the hallmarks of an RK film were all there in it.

Then, the film ‘Ek Hi Raasta’ tackled the issue of widow re-marriage and acceptance of a new father by the child. Comedy entertainer ‘Nai Dilli’ emphasized the need for inter language marriages in India. Satyajit Ray’s ‘Aparajita’- the sequel to ‘Pather Panchali’ (1955), hit the screens in India after winning accolades internationally.
