Raat ki malka ban thhan ke

“Ismat” (1944) was an extremely obscure movie. Hardly any information was available about this movie.
I have discussed one song from this movie in the past. The comments by our knowledgeable readers, namely our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh as well as another reader, Mr Sami, on that post has given us some rare information about this movie. Now we know that this movie was produced by Fazli brothers and directed by Sibtain Fazli. The movie had Nargis and Jaani Babu in the lead, supported by Mehtab, Nandrekar, Bhudo Advani, Pratima Devi, Irshad, Ghori etc. The story had an interesting Muslim social story whereby Nandrekar the hero is married to Mehtab and then remarries to Nargis as second wife.

In K L Saigal’s films, the songs sung by most of other singers remained on the periphery as compared to his magic spelled songs. Even on Radio Ceylon’s programme on old film songs which used to be broadcasted between 7.30-8.00 a.m. in olden days, I rarely heard songs of other singers in K L Saigal’s films while K L Saigal’s song used to be the final song of the programme. Take for example songs of ‘My Sister’ (1944). There are at least two beautiful solo songs sung by Utpala Sen but as compared with Saigal’s four songs which were hugely popular in my younger days, I had not heard any of her songs from this film until I bought one 78 RPM gramophone record in early 70s on which one side of the record had ‘jal jaane do is duniya ko’. I heard her other song from the film only last year.

MAN KI JEET (1944) was produced and directed by W Z Ahmed under the banner of Shalimar Pictures owned by him. Shyam and Nina were in the lead roles. The story of the film was said to be based on Thomas Hardy’s novel ‘Tess of the D’urbervilles’. One of the most popular songs from this film nagri meri kab tak yoon hi barbaad rahegi has been discussed in this blog.

This is the 10th and the last song of the series- SONGS BY NON SINGERS.
For me it has been a very hectic fortnight involving a very busy schedule. Luckily, I was able to locate all the songs’ video and Audio on You Tube but not without the customary hiccups.
Collecting authentic information about old, fogotten artists was also very challenging. To get atleast 10 songs, I dug out about 30 songs from films of 30s to 70s.

In my younger days, I disliked the traditional classical vocal music as I had no patience to listen to a couple of verses umpteen times with longish alaaps. I used to feel that the ‘progression’ in the vocal music was too slow for me to get interested in listening to such recitals. However, I liked the filmy and non-filmy songs based on classical ragas as those would get over in about 3 minutes. My taste on traditional classical vocal music changed when I bought a LP of Pandit D V Paluskar in early 70s mainly for 5 devotional songs contained in the one side, the other side being his full length vocal recital on raag Shri. This LP was a turning point for me and I started liking Hindustani classical music. I felt that he must be a great classical vocalist whose vocal music sounded great to my untrained ears.

The Voice of Mukesh #3

As I come in to the third post in this series, I must put on record that I have still not been able to trace and secure a recording of the second duet from the film ‘Dukh Sukh’ (1942). The duet – “Mori Atariyaa Pe Aa Jaa, O Pardesi Panchhi”, is sung with Sitara. And I repeat my request to my friends and fellow contributors on this blog, to please inform in case one has any information about the availability of this song. I am hopeful we shall get to hear this song, since the physical record number is known – N26105. Right now, just waiting for the luck to strike.
