Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Panchhi tu jaa re

Posted on: September 19, 2011

Here is a song that is extremely rare and obscure even by the standards of this blog where rare songs are discussed on a regular basis. And a song like this cannot be discovered just by stumbling against them in some site. One needs to consciously search for songs like this by name. I had got a lead somewhere that there was a music director called Pt Govardhna Prasad who was the father of Khemchand Prakash. Pt Govardhan Prasad worked as a music director in only one movie and that movie was called “Ismat”. With this minute bit of information, I set out to search for the songs of this movie.

Here is a song from “Ismat” (1944). Apart from the information about the music director, I do not have much information about the song. From the voice, I guess that the singer is Rajkumari. I have no idea about the lyricist of this song, but I have read the name of Shams in another song of this movie, so I guess that the same Shams could well have written this song too, and this Shams could well be Shams Lucknowi.

I may well have made wrong assumptions, but then that is how archaelogists find out about old civilisations. 🙂 And when it comes to searching for old songs like this, sometimes one finds himself digging for information, very much like an archaelogist.

I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and this song. This song is rarest of rare from a movie that is obscurest of obscure. I have not been able to get a few lines in the lyrics right and I request our readers with keener ears to point out the missing/correct words.

PS- Our inhouse encyclopedia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh acknowledges that this movie is indeed an extremely rare movie and its details are difficult to come by, still he has lots and lots of invaluable information about this movie, viz.

It was produced by the Fazli Bros.Production, directed by Sibtain Fazli, elder of the brothers and Music was primarily given by Pt.Goverdhan Prasad, with all lyrics by Shams Lucknowi. However 2 songs were added to the film which were composed by one H.P.Sharma.
The above song,’ Panchhi tu jaa re ” and ” Badali hawa miti bahar ” had music by H.P.Sharma.The other 5 songs are by Pt.Goverdhan Prasad.
The cast included Nargis and Jaani Babu in the lead, supported by Mehtab, Nandrekar, Bhudo Advani, Pratima Devi, Irshad, Ghori etc.

So the music of this song is by Hanuman Prasad Sharma and not by Pt Govardhan Prasad. My guess about the lyricist is spot on though.

The song is a poignant song where the lady is badly missing her beloved and is clutching at every straw that could bring her solace. She asks a bird to go and deliver her message to him. And she asks the bird to go and bring her beloved back. and if you cannot bring him back, then you too need not come back, she tells the bird.

This is a movie and a movie song and movies are often more unbelievable than real life, but I do not think that is the case all the time. Sometimes real life can be even more unbelievable. The panchhi in this song obviously cannot bring her beloved back, but I know for sure that pets who are brought up together do that. At least my pet can do that.

I have three pets. THe female cat is called Nuppy and the two male dogs are called Bholey and Chhotey. While Nuppy and Bholey have been brought up with some discipline,Chhotey, the youngest of the lot has been spoilt silly by my wife. Nuppy and Bholey are mature enough and they realise that their household is the best place for them and they come back home even after they go out of house. But the immature and spoilt Chhotey seeks to run out of home. Unlike the other two pets, he does not even know the way back home so he gets stranded every time he manages to escape out of home. But everytime he finds his way back home, even without any human intervention. Whenever he runs out of home, Nuppy gets concerned about him and goes out and brings him back. I do not know how a cat and a dog communicate, but Chhote “listens” to her and agrees to come back home following in Nuppy’s footsteps. This has happened so many times that it is obviously not a fluke but a fact. A 20 Kg dog persuaded by a 2 Kg cat to come back home really happens in my household. And in one case, when Chhotey went after a dog double his size, Nuppy, unconcerned about her own safety, went with Chhotey.

That way, my pets can do what the “panchhi” in this song may not ever be able to do. Perhaps the lady should have brought up her “panchhi” with the same care with wich my pets have been brought up. 🙂

PS-Now it has been pointed out that the music director of this song was H P Das, viz Hariprasanna Das and not Hanuman Prasad Sharma.

Your pets are indeed fortunate!

I think we are fortunate to have pets with quite high intelligence. Nuppy and Bholey appear especially bright to me. Chhotey is no less intelligent- he knows how to get preferential treatment- through sheer sycophancy, which never fails to win my wife over. 🙂

Atul ji,

The correct words in the first antaraa are as follows:
raat andheri bijli chamke
pee ki yaad sataati hai
raat andheri bijli chamke
pee ki yaad sataati hai
sooni sej pe neend na aaye ho re
sooni sej pe neend na aaye ho re

Also, in the third antaraa, please replace the lines:
jo maange so doongi mol tujhe
kyaa chaahiye kuch munh se bol to den
jo maange so doongi mol tujhe
kyaa chaahiye kuch munh se bol to den

with the following lines:
jo maange so doongi mol tujhe
kyaa chaahiye kuch munh se bol tujhe
jo maange so doongi mol tujhe
kyaa chaahiye kuch munh se bol tujhe

“Ismat” was a very nice film with an interesting Muslim social story whereby Nandrekar the hero is married to Mehtab and then remarries to Nargis as second wife. The hit song of this film was by Amirbai and picturised on Mehtab – “Lab pe aayi hai duaa” which was very popular.

Atul Sir, thanks a lot for posting the lyrics. Several songs like this, were available at very few places, and though now obscure, I think, we moderately successful in their time. I have listened to it several times and love it. Here is some more information:

It is a duet of Amirbai Ji and Rajkumari Ji, sung for Nargis Ji and Mehtab Ji. The first part and the majority of the song is by the unmatched Amirbai Ji and the Muslim ‘Duwa’ at the end is by the great Rajkumari Ji. Every single song of these artists is a pure classic. The music director for 5 songs, as pointed out kindly by Arunkumar Sir, is Pandit Govardhan Prasad Ji. He was, in fact, the father of maestro Khemchand Prakash Ji and this was Pandit Ji’s only film. The other composer H. P. Das Ji was Hariprasanna Das Ji, who has composed some very beautiful songs during that decade. Mohabbat (1945), Kadambari (1945), Mazdoor (1945), Insaaf (1946) are some of his other films and Manna Dey Ji has worked as an assistant as well as a singer is some of his earliest films for Das Ji.
