Today’s song is from Safar-46. It was a Filmistan presentation which was the first film of C.Ramchandra in this company.

C.Ramchandra had worked in Jayant Desai Productions for the previous three years. He gave 5 jubilee films, Bhaktaraj-43,Zabaan-43, Manorama-44, Lalkaar-44, and Samrat Chandragupta-45 for this production house. He was getting only Rs.300 as salary. He had got married and needed more money now.

“Shama”(1946), not to be confused with “Shama”(1961) was directed by Adi F Kika, Rustam Khambata and K A Mazid for Minerva Movietone, Bombay. The movie had Mehtab, Wasti, Abu Bakar, Anwari, Prakash, Amir Banu, Sadat ali, Chanda Bai, Zafri Begam etc in it.

“Shama” is a movie title that leads to a serious bout of “same name confusion” among movie and music lovers. Not just casual followers of HFM but even “experts” make grave errors in mistaking one “Shama”with another, and worse, mistaking one music director with another-who also had similar names.

“Rupa”(1946) was an N R Desai Productions, Bombay film which had Jillo, Surekha, Urmila, Ratnamala, Biman Bannerji, Agha etc in it. This obscure movie had eight forgotten songs in it. One song from this movie has been discussed in the past.

JHUMKE (1946), produced under the banner of Chitra Productions was directed by J K Nanda. The main star cast comprised of Akhtar, Gajanan Jagirdar, Satish, Lalita Pawar and G N Bhat. The story of the film was written by Saadat Hasan Manto. I could not get much information about the film. Even the information on the the star cast of the film was sketchy. Luckily, I found a review of the film in one of the issues of ‘Filmindia’ of 1946. A shortened version of the review is set out below:

KRISHNA LEELA (1946) was produced under the banner of Geetanjali Pictures, Bombay and it was directed by Debaki Bose. The star cast included Kanan Devi, Paresh Bannerjee, Ranjit Roy, Suprova, Debi Mukherjee, Hiralal, Kamal Mitra, Gokul Mukherjee etc.

It is now more than one year since I began scouting for rare songs – especially songs from films released during the 1940s (1941-1950). My definition of rare songs is limited to those songs which have not been uploaded on video websites like YT. Among such songs, I make a further selection in that I generally prefer to write articles with those songs which sound melodious to my ears and have good lyrics.

Why am I producing REHANA (1946)?

This was the heading of a full page advertisement issued by the producer G A Thakur, the owner of Girdhar Bahar Productions in October 1945 issue of ‘Filmindia’ magazine. He was announcing his intention of producing ‘Rehana’ (1946), the story of which is based on the Middle-East background.
