Today, I am presenting a duet song “Zulm Bhi Karten Hain Aur Kehten Hain Fariyaad Na Kar” sung by Suman Kalyanpur and Mohammed Rafi in ‘Mera Ghar Mere Bachche’ (1960). This song has been in my radar for more than two years, to present in the blog. However, I got overtly involved with locating the rare songs from the films of 1940s and share those. During this period, I thought that Rafi fans or ‘Sureeli’ Suman Kalyanpur fans among the Atulites would post this song on the Blog. But this did not happen. So I am destined to present this song.

Veena, that is in the hand of Goddess Saraswati; veena, that is the source of all knowledge and all that is music in this creation.
Yes, the voice of Lata ji. A voice that is adorned in many a thousand ways, a voice that lives in the minds and memories through many a thousand songs, in Hindi films, in films of other regions, and songs that don’t belong to films. The legacy is a treasure. Quite so much has been written about this voice, my adding more would simply be repeating what has been said before. And much of that discussion is an overbearing analysis of the phases and careers, that are after all moot points, when arrayed against the qualities of the voice itself. That discussion is like ‘गूंगे की शक्कर’ – the description of the sweetness of sugar as expressed by a person who cannot speak. He would place the sugar on your palm, and tell you silently, to taste it, to eat it. After that tasting, no words are necessary, to discuss what sugar is. 🙂

“Durga Maata”(1960) was produced and directed by B S Ranga for Vikram Productions, Madras. The movie had Rajkumar (south), Sowcar Janaki, Sandhya, Nagan, Narsomharaju, Bhatt etc in it. It appears to me that this movie was a remake/ dubbed version of a Sputh Indian movie where songs were created afresh for the Hindi version.

Today’s song is from the film Captain India-1960. Not only this film is making a Debut on the Blog, but its Music Director- Hemant Kedar- too is making his Debut here. It is a rare occasion these days that a music Director makes his Debut in the blog, because we have covered so many MDs already ( at my last count, we have covered 462 MDs on this Blog). However, there are still a large number of MDs whom we have yet to listen. From 1931 to till today, as per a rough estimate, there could be almost 500 to 700 Music Directors.

“Laalach”(1960) was produced by B C Sharma and L N Desai and directed by R D Rajput for Sagar Film Company, Bombay. The movie had Kamran, Indira, Sheila Kashmiri, Majnu, Arvind Kumar, Wazeer Mohammad Khan, Jillani, Harish, Heera Sawant, Shakeel Bano Bhopali, Dubey, Badshah Chorbazari, S Badshah, Harun, Ghulab, Kadir, Dalip, Ibrahim, Robert, Anil Kumar, Govind Dada, Aashiq, Begam etc in it.

“Mohabbat Ki Jeet”(1960) was produced and directed by B S Ranga for Vikram Productions, Madras. This movie had Raja Sulochana, Ranjan, Sowcar Janki, Sriram, Rajagopal etc in it. It appears from the cast that this movie may have been a remake of some South Indian movie though HFGK is silent about this fact.

Today’s song is from the film Basant-60. Its namesake film Basant was made in 1942 as well. But in matters of success, both films were opposite to each other. Basant-42, directed by Amiya Chakrawarty , was a successful film, having well known actors and Music Director. Basant-60 in contrast was not so much successful. It was not liked by people, though the lead actors were well known. Nutan was already acclaimed but Shammi Kapoor had yet to come to his elements which he would do with the film Junglee-61. He was still struggling with ‘ Hum sab chor hain ‘ and ‘ Tumsa nahi dekha ‘ acting styles.
