This article is the 8900th song post in the blog.
Two years have passed. Well, almost, just about two weeks short. It was another cool night of November that I was busy typing the write up for the 5000th song on this blog. There was much exhilaration and excitement that the 5000th milestone was reached. There were some very cautious and guarded comments, pointing towards the 10,000th song. “A very very sad day for Indian music” – that is the words that Pradeep ji has expressed just now, in his email response.
Manna Da, the voice behind the sounds of the rousing “Upar Gagan Vishaal,Neeche Gehraa Pataal” and the chartbusting peppy number “Aaao Twist Karen”, is silenced today. A voice that has regaled music lovers for over seven decades now, will not be heard any more. Manna Da breathed his last early morning today, at a hospital in Bangalore, having been unwell for the past few months.

Varsha Ritu (1969) an album in an LP form was released by HMV to the delight of music lovers. Non-Film songs (NFS) were very much in vogue those days. Lata, Manna Dey, Begum Akhtar, Mukesh, Talat Mehmood, Mahendra Kapoor, Lakshmi Shankar, Sudha Malhotra and Mubarak Begum had each one NFS in that album. Music for all except the first three in this list was composed by an HMV staff artist Murli Manohar Swarup.

Here is the “P” song in the A-Z of Rafi songs series. This is a semi classical solo song composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal in the film ‘Waapas” (1969). The lyricist of this song is the venerable poet Majrooh Sultabpuri. It is Majrooh’s birth anniversary today on 1st October, I have come to realise just now.
