Today’s song is from the film Holi-1940.
The film was made by Ranjit Movietone, Bombay. The director was A.R.Kardar and the Music was by Khemchand Prakash, who had taken over from Gyan Dutt in the beginning of 1940. The first paid composer of Ranjit was Gyan Dutt from 1937 to 1940. In this period he gave music to 15 films. Khemchand Prakash gave music to 20 films in his period from 1940 to 1945, when Bulo C Rani took over in 1945 onwards. The film cast included Motilal, Ishwarlal,Keshavrao Datey, Lala yakub, Mirza Musharraf, Khursheed, Sitara, Tarabai, Dikshit and Ghori and many others. Actually the major stars of this film , Motilal, Ishwarlal, Sitara and Khursheed were all well known singers. However it was strange that Ishwar lal sang in the voice of Kantilal and Khursheed got the playback of Kalyani in this film, without getting a single song for themself.

The film was made by the Ranjit Movietone, Bombay, which was known to offer a wide variety of Genres in their films. Family drama, Love story, Comedy, Tragedy Historical, Mythological Stunt and many others , except probably Jungle films like Tarzan etc.
From the beginning, Ranjit was in the big league, having a large spacious studio with all amenities and a battalion of A-1 grade artists in various fields like acting, direction and the technical side. 1-10-2012.
This is the date which I shall never ever forget in my life. There are dates for several milestones in one’s life, like date of Birth, Date of graduation, Date of Marriage, Date of retirement etc etc. barring a few, one forgets all other dates, because those dates have no relevance to his current or future life.
Certain dates one can never forget, because those are the dates when one’s life had taken a turn – like a Marriage date or a Retirement date etc. 1-10-2012 is neither my date of Birth nor my marriage nor retirement date. So, what is there that makes it so unforgettable ?

Today’s song is from a 89 year old Talkie film, Jeevan Lata-1936. This was the production of the then popular Sagar Movietone, Bombay. Sagar had introduced a new hero in the same year – Surendranath, who was promoted as a competition to Saigal from Calcutta’s giant New Theatres.
Film Jeevanlata-1936 featured Motilal and Sabita devi. Motilal was introduced by Sagar in 1934 – opposite Sabita Devi, for whom that was her 4th talkie film with the production house. Jeevanlata-1936 was the 5th film of Motilal and the 8th film of Sabita Devi.

Today’s song is from the film Comrades-1939.
The title of the film was highly misleading. The general meaning of the word Comrades is a Communist Party Member. I was surprised how this title was given to a film, that too when the second world war had just begun. But this title was used to indicate the intimacy and friendship of 2 boys and 1 girl from their childhood. This was a Love triangle naturally, when 2 boys and 1 girl are involved.

Today’s song is from an 88 year old film- Premveer-1937. It was made by Huns Pictures, Kolhapur by the owner, producer and the director of this film – Master Vinayak.
It was just 6 years ago that India had entered the Talkie film era, with Alam Ara-1931. Initially films were based on Mythology, folk stories and historical figures. Soon the talented filmmakers like V.Shantaram, Master Vinayak, Baburao Painter, Sohrab Modi, Himanshu Rai, B.C.Sircar, S.S.Vasan and others realised that the Talkie films have to be handled differently that the Silent films. Being a novelty, the moving pictures or the Silent films were in a sellers’ market – which meant that whatever was produced was sold. But now that the films had started talking, story content, music, acting, direction and the themes needed to be accepted by the audience. This meant that new filmmakers were in Buyers’ market and they needed to make what had a demand from the audience.
