Today’s song is from the film Bahurani-1950. Films with the same title were made in 1940, 1950, 1963 and 1989. All films had different storylines. Bahurani 1950 was about a bahu who comes to a house after marriage, which is on the brink of breaking relationships due to crumbling family business and subsequent dwindling finances. The story is about how the clever Bahu mends matters to improvement and earlier glory and happiness.

‘Bahurani’ (1940) was produced by Kishore Sahu under the banner of the then newly set up, India Artists Ltd. The star cast included Kishore Sahu and Rose in the lead roles with Anuradha, Mubarak, Pratima Devi, Masood, Nana Palsikar etc in the supporting role. The film had its mahurat shot taken in January 1940 under the direction of Mubarak. In February 1940, R S Junnarkar was assigned the direction of the film along with Mubarak. So, it was their joint directorial venture. For Mubarak, it was his maiden attempt as a director which happened to be his last film as a director. R S Junnarkar was a screen-play and dialogue writer for Huns Pictures of Master Vinayak. It was also his first Hindi film as a director.

“Bahurani” (1963) was a Meena Pictures Production. It was directed by T Prakash Rao. The movie had Guru Dutt, Mala Sinha, Feroz Khan, Shyama Pratima Devi, Badri Prasad, Lalita Pawar, Shyama, N. Hussain, Agha, Mukri, Manorama etc in it.

This song can be put into several categories. This song narrowly misses from becoming a “movie opening song”. The song begins immediately after the credits disappear from the screen. Guru Dutt and Mala Sinha are just married and it is their suhaag raat. But Guru Dutt, instead of taking interest in his newly wedded bride, complains that he cannot get sleep because of her.
