Today’s song is from an interesting comedy film- 300 days and after-1938.

The title of this film itself was of a different type and not like any other film so far. The story was also of a different type.

This was the first decade of the Talkie films. it had just completed 7 years with 829 films, but in these 7 years many experimental films were made and various types of genres were tried. In these years the stress had been on making films on Folk tales, Mythological and Historical stories, remakes of successful Silent films, Love stories and Social films etc.

The cast of the film included Mazhar Khan, Bibbo, E, Billimoria, Miss Moti, Hadi, Bose, Pratima Devi and others.

There were 3 films with the same title, made in 1941, 1963 and 1991. Then there were variations like Akeli, Akele Hum Akele tum, Akeli Ladki and Akeli mat Jaiyo (last film made by Ranjit Studios in 1963).

Today’s song is from the film Ladies Only-1939.

The year was 1939 and the British Government had declared war against Germany and Japan, as soon as the WW II began. All countries ruled by Britain were – willingly or unwillingly, drawn into the war efforts and its effects. The war began in the month of September and soon various restrictions came into operation – like rationing, blackouts, shortages etc. The film industry which was still under its development stage suffered. It also realised the importance of remaining united as one industry. However, all that came after 1 or 2 years. In 1939 there was not much effect seen on the film industry.

Today’s song is a duet from a very old film-almost 90 year old- Gramophone Singer-1938.

From the 19th century till the beginning years of the 20th Century, the only means of public entertainment was stage dramas and local folk dances pertaining to each demographic region individually. The first gramophone recording took place in India when 2 Nautch Girls- Sashi Mukhi and Feni Bala from Amarendra Dutta’s classical Theatre sang songs in Calcutta on 8-11-1902, Saturday, for a recording.

Today’s song is a duet from an 85 year old comedy film-Ladies Only-1939.

This film was made by Sagar Movietone. Sagar came up very fast in the film industry and then it got eclipsed also very fast within about 10 years. Starting with Sagar Film Company, it made 12 silent films. Its first Talkie film was Veer Abhimanyu in 1931. By 1940 , Sagar had made 52 Hindi films, 5 Tamil films, 4 Gujarati films, 3 Telugu films and 1 each in Punjabi and Bengali languages. Then it merged with National Studios and made 16 films under this banner.

Today’s song is from an early talkie film ‘Gramophone Singer’ (1938).

The film was made by Sagar Movietone. It was directed by Ramchandra Thakur and Virendra Desai (owner Chimanlal Desai’s son and the first husband of Nalini Jayawant). The 15 songs of the film were written by Zia Sarhadi – who rose to great heights in the Indian film industry, but was humiliated, suspected and ill-treated in Pakistan. His end in Spain too was pathetic. Music Director for this film was Anil Biswas. The cast of the film was Surendra, Bibbo, Prabha, Bhudo Advani, Kanhaiyalal, Sankatha Oprasad, Gulzar and many others.
