I have posted a few songs from “Vaasnaa” (1968) in the past. This movie had some nice songs in it. But considering that 1968 had a bumper crop of outstanding songs, many great songs found themselves pushed out of contention by other songs jostling for the same space. Songs of “Vaasna” fell in that category.

“Burma Road” (1962) was a low budget movie starring Ashok Kumar, Sheikh Mukhtaar, Kumkum etc. Movie may be a low budget and therefore B grade, but its music was A grade.

“Zabak” (1961) was a mythological Arabian Nights kind of movie produced by Homi Wadia. Mahipal and Shyama played lead roles in this movie.

In Bollywood movies, when boy first sees a girl, he would sing a teasing song addressed to her. She would take exception, naturally, but later on, she would fall in love with him and then they would sing a duet, running round trees.

It is quite common for me to remark that many of the songs being posted are songs that I came across only recently. And I also find myself remarking frequently that I found these songs to be gem stuff, even though the movies as well as the songs contained in these movies failed to get popular.

As obscure movies go, “Police Detective” (1960) must be among the most obscure. This movie had Sujit Kumar, Shyama,Jayshree Gadkar and Anwar Hussain in lead roles. It was a B grade movie.

In old Bollywood movies, most leading actors would be shown seated on a grand piano and singing a song. Now it is not possible to sing and play a grand piano simultaneously, but when you are lip syncingto some one else’s voice and music is someone else’s creation, as are the lyrics,then nothing is impossible in Bollywood.

When one is looking for musical gems from the past, there are just too many of them. One big source of such great songs is the so called B and C grade movies. Look for the music of the music directors of such movies, and you will strike pay dirt.
