NURSE (1943), also known as CHHOTI MAA, was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. The star cast included Khursheed, Arun Ahuja, Prabha, Anil Kumar, Indira, Sheikh etc. From the title of the film, I thought that it was a heroine oriented film. But after reading the synopsis of the film given by Shri Arunkumar Deshmukh as comments in one of the songs of the film, it was clear that it was more of a family drama than the story on the life of a nurse. UMMEED (1941) was produced by Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Manibhai Vyas. The cast included Ishwarlal, Prabha, Noor Jahan Sr., Dixit, Neela, Ibrahim, Brijmala, Bhagwandas, Kasam, Kesri etc. The film was a family drama with a light comedy touch. The film was reviewed in May 1941 issue of ‘Filmindia’ magazine and had given a verdict of a delightful entrainment. A gist of the story of the film based on this review is given below:

MEHMAAN (1942) was a social film which was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. The star cast included Madhuri, Ishwarlal, Shamim, Rama Shukul, Mubarak, Kesari, Bhagwandas etc. There were 12 songs in the film penned by D N Madhok (11) and Pandit Indra Chandra (1) which were set to music by Khemchand Prakash. I often gets confused in recognising the voice of Meena Kapoor while listening to mp3 clips of her rare songs and the reason is that I find her voice closely resembling that of Geeta Dutt. I feel that, in a way, Meena Kapoor is to Geeta Dutt what Suman Kalyanpur is to Lata Mangeshkar. I can understand as to why Suman Kalyanpur lagged behind Lata Mangeshkar in terms of playback singing assignments as, among other reasons, the latter had already established her footprint in Bollywood when Suman Kalyanpur entered some time in 1954. But why did Meena Kapoor not get as many assignments as a playback singer as Geeta Dutt got when both started their playback singing at the same time?

Today is the 83rd birthday of Sulochana Kadam (nee Chavan) whose singing career started, more or less, at the same time that of Lata Mangeshkar and Geeta Dutt. While the latter two playback singers are well known even to the current generation, the name of Sulochana Kadam may not sound familiar to them. However, she is well known as lavani Singer Sulochana Chavan in Maharashtra, South Madhya Pradesh and North Karnataka.
