I am writing again today to document another very important interaction; an interaction that has been a dream for me for many months now. I am in San Diego today, and the local time is 2.00 am. And I am writing this post from the residence of Shri Surjit Singh ji. I am sure friends on this blog would be familiar with his name, in context of Hindi films and film music. He is a diehard fan of this music, and has been playing a major role in raising awareness about it, collecting rare materials and making them available on the internet. His web site is at here , and I recommend friends and readers on this blog to visit this and find out more about him.

Continuing with the series of delightful but rare songs from Mukesh. This offering is a lovely heartfelt melody from an unreleased and obscure film from 1964, ‘Bhool Na Jaanaa’. The songs, that have thankfully not been lost, are a wonderful treat, and the credit goes to Daan Singh, who is the composer for this film. Practically all the songs of this film are gems of the first water, something that speaks to the unsung talent of this great musician from Jaipur. There are seven songs available from this unreleased film, three of which are already discussed on this blog, viz. “Mere Humnasheen Mere Humnawaan” sung by Geeta Dutt, “Gora Gora Mukhdaa Ye Tu Ne Kahaan Paayaa Hai” sung by Mukesh, and “Gham e Dil Kis Se Kahoon” also by Mukesh. The earlier posts include brief write ups about the circumstances of this film, and how it got shelved. A film about the 1962 war with China, it got entangled with the changed government policy in 1964-65 to not depict anything negative about China. And Daan Singh, a very talented musician, was branded unlucky with his very first venture itself.

The film Bhool Na Jaanaa, is an unreleased film from the 1964-65 time frame. Started under the banner of Integrity International, by producer Jagan Prasad Sharma, its storyline was built around the Indo-China war of 1962. By the time this film was under production, the govt. of India refused permission for this film to be released. Apparently the relations with China were improving, and the govt. put a ban on films on this subject. (May be it was lucky for Chetan Anand that his film on the same subject, Haqeeqat, got released in 1964, and the ban probably came after that). Although in an advanced stage of completion, the production of this film was shelved.

Daan Singh, a name that may not ring many bells or evoke many memories. But the mention of memorable songs such as ‘Mere Hamnasheen Mere Humnawaan’ (Geeta Dutt, Bhool Na Jaanaa, c1965, unreleased), ‘Zikr Hota Hai Jab Qayaamat Kaa’ and ‘Who Tere Pyaar Ka Gham, Ik Bahaanaa Thhaa Sanam’ (both Mukesh, My Love, 1970), or ‘Laagaa Mohey Pehli Baar, Pandrah Pe Ek Nayaa Saal’ (Asha Bhosle, Toofaan, 1969), is sure to vibrate some strings inside and the mind is sure to respond with a ‘wow’.
