Today (23 october 2014) is the festival of deepaawali. This festival is supposed to bring joy and happiness in the lives of everyone. I can certainly vouch for that. My main computer that has been hijacked by my wife for the last few days was surprisingly available to me this morning. I wake up earlier than others on the pretext of letting the dog out and teaching the daughter. The dogs were wide awake as usual but my daughter (and wife) are not (as usual). That gave me the opportunity of sitting on my main computer and try and give finishing touch to the posts for the day.

“Jeewan Jyoti” (1953) was directed by Mahesh Kaul for Musical Pictures, Bombay. this movie was one of the earlist movies of the then underconfident looking Shammi Kapoor. The movie had Shammi Kapoor, Chand Usmani, Shashikala, Leela Mishra, Dulaari, Amir Banu, Nazeer Hussain, Bannerji, Moni Chatterji, Saiyyad Jaan, Lily Kelkar, Jagdish Chandra etc in it.

“Dulaari” (1949) was a Kardar Production movie. It was produced and directed by A R Kardar. The movie had Suresh, Madhubala, Geeta Bali, Shyam Kumar, Jayant, Amar, Pratima Devi, Nawab etc in it.

Musically this movie is today fondly remembered for the song that made Rafi a singing sensation. This song, viz. Suhaani raat dhal chuki is the reason why most people know about this movie.

“Dulaari” (1949) is a movie which is today fondly remembered as the movie that helped Rafi break into the big league with the song Suhaani raat dhal chuki. Till then, Rafi’s style of singing had few takers in the Hindi movie music and with this movie it became the new style of singing. It was a paradigm shift which few people at that time may have realised. In fact the management term “Paradigm Shift” itself was not coined at that time.
