I am a big fan of Ravi. He is perhaps the only music director who was around when the golden era of Hindi movie music began to the time this era was finally gone for ever. His career began as a chorus singer in late 1940s,then he became assistant to Hemant Kumar (he was his assistant in “Naagin” (1954)) and then he became an independent music director with “Vachan” (1955). From then on till 1980s, he composed songs, many of which became so popular that they ended up becoming iconic songs. I in fact describe Ravi as a composer of iconic songs.

“Jab se Tumhe Dekha Hai” (1963) is a lesser known movie from the past. It had Pradeep Kumar and Geeta Bali in lead roles. As was the case with most movies of those days, the songs of this movie too are nice to listen to.

There is very little known about this movie called “Bedardi” (1951). I only know this much about this movie that it had actors like Nimmi, Geeta Bali, Jeewan, Jaswant (?), Amirbai Karnataki, I C Kapoor etc in it.
This movie is obscure and the same can be said about its music as well, but the songs of this movie are nice songs to listen to.

Songs in which actors, especially male actors would accuse female actors of “bewafaayi” were quite common in Hindi movies. Such songs would often be sung in isolation, but often such songs would be sung in get together/ parties too. The male actor would go on with his accusation and the female would feel embarrased as well as guilty in full public view. The public, viz the other participants in the party would consist of people standing/ sitting in their positions like statues.

“Jauhri” (1951) is a forgotten movie in which (believe it or not) Manorama was the lead actress and a few songs were picturised on her, too.

“Miss Coca Cola” (1955) is one of those few movies in which real life spouses Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali had acted together. And this is one movie whose prints are apparently all lost.

I am not much familar with this movie called “Milaap” (1955). Apparently it was a suspense movie directed by Raj Khosla. The movie had Dev Anand, Geeta Bali, K N Singh, Tuntun,Johny Walker, Tuntun etc. The star cast is quite impressive, and this appears to be good movie to watch if one can get hold of it.

There is rarely an excuse required in Hindi movies for a song. Birthday or wedding celebration parties (with the ubiquitous piano), the “tribal” dance scenes, club dances, hero-heroine scenes out in beautiful natural surroundings, the pining scenes and the mujra scenes – these are all well-established occasions waiting for a song to happen.
