Thhaade rahiyo o baanke yaar

When one looks at the calender of Hindi movie music, one finds that almost every day of the year is important in one respect or the other. Today (31st march) for instance is the day when Meena Kumari expired exactly 40 years ago. I was a school kid at that time and we school kids, on hearing this news opined that “Paakeeza”, the much awaited movie of Meena Kumari would benefit from her death. And the judgement of us pre teen kids turned out to be accurate. 🙂 What Prophetic kids we were those days! 🙂

I had taken it for granted that the song ‘zindagi ki kasam ho chuke unke ham’ from film MAALIK (1958) has already been discussed in this blog. When I saw the movie-wise list of songs just to know in which year this film was released, I found that two songs from this film have been discussed and this song was not one of them.

Today, India is celebrating the 64th anniversary of freedom from the British rule. A movement that lasted almost 100 years – starting with disjoint uprisings against the Britishers, and the first coordinated war of independence in 1857, the struggle and resistance was carried forward by many stalwarts across the entire country. There was the nationwide resistance movement through political and social disobedience. Besides, there were other complementary movements, that added impetus to this struggle for freedom. Groups of young people, charged with the objective of bringing to end the oppressive reign of an alien government, came together in various cities in different parts of the country, and conducted local resistance and struggle. Kundan, the 1955 production from Minerva Movietone, depicts one such group of young men, as a subplot to the main theme and story of the film.

The melodious strains of ‘Chalo Dildaar Chalo, Chaand Ke Paar Chalo’, composed more than 4 decades ago, sound and feel like a fresh breeze of air, every time one listens to it. The magnum opus of the famously talented Ghulam Mohammed, a string of his best creations – ‘Chalte Chalte Yun Hi Koi Mil Gayaa Thhaa’, ‘Inhi Logon Ne Le Leena Dupatta Mera’, ‘Mausam Hai Aashiqaana’ and more – establish the definition of what Ghulam Mohammed’s body of musical creation is. A pity that this success came somewhat late in the day – a release that marked a watershed in the history of Hindi film music was to happen about three years after the demise of its creator.
