This Week, That Year – 7

30May – 05Jun, 2011

Celebrations today – the first item of order. Yes, the two numbers above are telling a telling tale (pardon the pun please). I have been on board now, well, it seems all my life now. Yes, so many years ago. And as we continue this relentless beat forward, I continue to keep marveling – at the fact that the blog seems to have gotten a life of its own and the bandwagon continues to chug along merrily.

It is stated often – the destination is not of any import. It is the journey that has to be enjoyed. And as this blog keeps growing from height to height and going from strength to strength, these minor milestones and even the major milestones have really become a matter of routine. Ok yes – another century, well, this number of days, well, this average of songs per day, well. . .  As I said, just a matter of routine that these stations come and go past quickly.

Around 11 pm last night it started to drizzle.  Rain on 26th January is not an unheard of, or unexpected thing.  But still, it can dampen the spirit of celebration at this  annual event of national importance.  And so the concern is always there.  When I woke up early this morning, it had drizzled all night long.  Along with the continuing cold temperatures, the clouds and the precipitation foretold a dreary day.  Literally, raining on the parade.

Greetings to all on today’s celebration of the Republic Day of India.  65 years ago today, the Constitution of India was brought into effect, and our nation was declared a Republic.

The ‘W’ song is a Rafi solo from the film ‘Ghar ki Izzat'(1948). From the sound of it, it does not sound like a 40’s song at all. Rather it feels like a 50’s song. The lyricist is Ishwar Chandra Kapoor and Pandit Govindram is the music director. Though the first hit solo by Rafi sahab is said to be from the film ‘Dulaari'(1949), Suhaani raat dhal chuki, but there are by some amazingly melodious songs like Keh ke bhi na aaye tum, Bahut maayoos hokar koochha e qaatil se ham nikle, Bahut mukhtsar hai hamaari kahaani, Ab na been bajaa, Mohabbat mein khudaaya aise guzre, Ae dil neend na aayee tamaam raat from before 1949. In these songs too he is standing out as the clearest and most mellifluous voice among singers of the time. Even more so in those two songs from the film ‘Amar Raj” (1946) posted in the blog. With songs like Ye zindagi ke mele and Ik dil ke tukde hazaar huye also in 1948, which are my personal favourites, Rafi sahab had already announced his arrival, even though we were not born to hear this announcement 🙂 🙂 .
