Today’s fun song is from the film ‘Kunwara Baap’ (1942).
The first reaction after reading the title of the film will be Mehmood’s film of 1974 having the same title. But rest assured today’s film was made in 1942 and had a different story. Mehmood’s film was based on an incurable disease – Polio, suffered by a child and it had a touch of pathos, creating sympathy and allied feelings. But ‘Kunwara Baap’ of 1942 was a fun film.

I had never thought highly of producer-director Kishore Sahu until I read an article written in August 1942 issue of ‘Filmindia’ by Hyacinth (a pseudo name for Susheela Rani Patel) a few months back. Until then, I had come across his name as the director of ‘Dil Apna Aur Preet Paraayi’ (1960) which I had seen in the theatre. Then, I was also aware of him of his association with ‘Kaalighata’ (1951) and ‘Mayur Pankh’ (1954). But in all these films, Kishore Sahu was not in my radar as my attention was more on Shankar-Jaikishan for their melodious songs in these movies.

Considerable effort of musicians and music arrangers, besides the sound recordist, goes into the creation of any song that finally result in the song ending up becoming hummable for public at large. Some of the great musicians and arrangers who worked ‘behind the curtain’ in creating these songs were Antony Gonsalves, Antanio Vaz (Chic Chocolate), Sebastian D’souza, Frank Fernand, Enoch Daniels, Van Shipley, Manohari Singh, Kersi Lord, Maruti Rao Keer among many others.

Bombay has been the centre of Film making in India right from the very beginning. Why Bombay and not any other city in India ? It was because Bombay wahub of business activities in India, because it attracted Talent from all over the country and because the Bombay Government constantly made attempts to develop it as a metropolitan city. Old records indicate that a total of 2.72 lakh people migrated to Bombay in 1911, while this figure was was 4.21 lakhs in 1921 and more than 5 lakh people came to Bombay in 1931 to seek employment.
