12 july is the death anniversary of Rajendra Kumar (DOB-20 july 1929-DOD 12 july 1999). Apart from moviegoers of his time, he was a delight to the movie makers too, because his movies tended to be box office hits. In fact, he was nicknamed Jubilee Kumar for this Midas touch.

This is a song that I have heard many a times in the past but all these days I had no clue which movie this was from. It is not that I was not familiar with the movie. Indeed I was very much aware of the movie and I had discussed as many as four songs from this movie in the blog.

“Kaali Topi Laal Roomaal” (1959) was a B grade movie starring Chandrashekhar,Shakila,Kumkum, Agha, K N Singh etc. This movie should have ended up unsung like most B grade movies, but its songs were so wonderful that they caught the imagination of the public. As a result, the movie ended up as a big grosser.

Chale ho kahaan karke jee beqaraar

Here is a song from a light hearted movie called “Bhaagam Bhaag” (1956). The song begins with Shashikala lip syncing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. Then Kishore Kumar appears singing not in his voice but in Rafi’s voice. Yes, this song is one of the few occasions when Kishore Kumar, despite his well known singing prowess, was made to lip sync in another playback singer’s voice.
