“Miss Bombay”(1957) was produced by Gulshan Bahl and directed by Kedar Kapoor for N C Films, Bombay. The movie, described as a social movie, had Nalini Jaiwant and Ajit in lead roles with Rehman, Tiwari, Ramesh Thakur, Bhagwan, Vijay laxmi, Rajendra, Praveen Paul, Bhudo Advani, Vijay Pandit, Kathana, Urvashi, Kanchanmala etc in it.

I am glad that I posted this song when I did. As per my search, this is possibly the last song of Rafi Sb that starts with ‘ऊ’, and not yet posted on our blog. Just made it by cat’s whiskers. Otherwise, I would have been expressing regrets, just like for ‘ई’.  🙂

Today is the Death Anniversary of India’s most versatile singer Mohammed Rafi saab. Thanks to his evergreen songs, we still feel his presence amongst us. In last so many years India has not produced a single singer of Rafi’s calibre. One can not just say that those times were different and there was hardly any competition to him. Even in those days there was competition, but a healthy one. Artistes appreciated each others and conveyed their likings to the concerned artists, be it a role acting or a song or a tune. Even though for quite some time Kishore Kumar seemed to rule the industry, he was good enough to say that” Hum to bhai Barsaati mendhak hai. Barsaat khatam, hum khatam. Rafi saab jaise Timeless singer nahin hain hum.”

“Miss Bombay” (1957) was not about a female beauty queen, but about a bus called “Miss Bombay”, which is driven by Ajit in the movie. This movie was produced by N C films and it was directed by Kedar Kapoor. The movie had Ajit, Nalini Jaiwant, Bhagwan,Tiwari,Rehman,Vijaylaxmi,Bhudo Adwani,Pravin Pal etc in it. This movie may have led to some fan following among other B grade movie makers, because movies with similar titles, viz. Miss Punjab Mail, Miss Toofaan Mail etc. were produced the next year.

Think of a music director from Punjab, preparing music for a film whose story is set in Bombay. And one of the songs is based on the local folk dance of Maharashtra. And guess what you will get? A Lavani based song spiced with exclamations of ‘haishaa’. And if you don’t believe me, well just go ahead and listen to this wonderful folk dance song from the 1957 film Miss Bombay. (NOTE: ‘haishaa’ is an exclamation that is used often in Punjabi folk songs.).
