In the 1930s and 1940s, there was a producer and director by the name of Kikubhai Desai. He had produced and directed many mythological films in the silent era. With the advent of talkies in 1931, Kikubhai Desai switched over to talkies. His expertise lay in producing talkies of stunt, costume and magical genres. He also directed a few of these films produced by him under these genres. Some of the films he produced under the banner of Paramount Pictures were ‘Chalta Purza’ (1934), ‘Khooni Kanjhar’ (1935), ’Jaadui Danda’ (1935), ‘Burkhawali’ (1936), ‘Guru Ghantal’ (1937), ‘Alladdin Aur Jaadui Chiraag’ (1938), ‘Aflatoon Aurat’ (1940) etc. These films were meant for mass entertainment only. This is a song from the film Najaria-52. It is a duet by Kishore and an unknown female voice. The song is one of those rare songs when Kishore sang for someone other than himself or Dev Anand in the early 50s. That was the time when Kishore Kumar was trying hard, but composers were not taking him seriously as a singer. Only S D Burman started using him for Dev Anand from the film Baazi-51. Almost all other songs of Kishore were for himself on the screen.

THE SECRETARY (1938) was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. The star cast included Madhuri, Trilok Kapoor, Charlie, Kalyani, Begg, Wahidan Bai, Rajkumari etc. The film was based on a story written by Gunvantrai Acharya, one of the most prolific novelists in Gujarati language. By the way, I observe that Gunvantrai Acharya wrote story and screen play for films directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi for Ranjit Movietone like Gorakh Aaya (1938), Musaafir (1940) and Sasural (1941). Both came to Ranjit Movietone after their stints with journalism in Gujarati newspapers. Incidentally, all the three films and the film under discussion had Gyan Dutt as the music director.
