This is a song from the film Najaria-52. It is a duet by Kishore and an unknown female voice. The song is one of those rare songs when Kishore sang for someone other than himself or Dev Anand in the early 50s. That was the time when Kishore Kumar was trying hard, but composers were not taking him seriously as a singer. Only S D Burman started using him for Dev Anand from the film Baazi-51. Almost all other songs of Kishore were for himself on the screen.

The reason why Kishore Kumar got a proper playback song to sing here was because the composer of this film was his friend and Fan. The composer was Bhola Shreshtha. Not many readers will be acquainted with the name of Bhola Shreshtha.

In the ocean of Hindi film industry, there were many talented and capable Music Directors who did not have enough luck or may be did not know the art of Self promotion. The list of such artistes is a long one, but the songs these composers have left behind, are testimony to their genius and they will surely keep their names alive for a long time. Composers like Daan Singh, Chand Pardesi, Sailesh Mukherjee, Sardar Malik, Dattaram, Narayan Dutt, K.Datta, Lachhiram, Ramlal, Mukul Roy, Kanu Ghosh, Kanu Roy,Jimmy, C.Arjun,Ajit Merchant, Dilip Dholakia, Dulal Sen, Dhaniram, Jamal Sen, Shambhu Sen, Sanmukhbabu Upadhyaya, Ganesh, Rajkamal,Shyamal Mitra……… are the forgotten ones. Each of them has contributed Gems in Music to Hindi films,to the best of their capabilities.

BHOLA SHRESHTHA is also one of them. His name was Bholanath Shreshtha. His grandparents hailed from Nepal, but later settled in Calcutta. Bhola was born on 17-6-1924. He was an expert in Tabla playing and had received a Silver Tray as a reward from Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore himself. In Calcutta his initial foray into film music was through K C and Manna Dey. Along with them, Bhola too came to Bombay and worked as an assistant to Khemchand Prakash in ‘Mahal’ and worked with Bulo C Rani for ‘Daroga ji’. Then he shared the music direction credits with Khemchand Prakash and Jimmy for ‘Muqaddar-48. From here only he became a good friend of Kishore Kumar for a very long time, till his death.

As an independent composer his first film was ‘Najariyaa’-52.In this film and next film,’Naulakha haar’,he used Kishore. Then came Aabshaar, Laakhon mein ek, Keemat and Tanakha. His last film ‘Ye basti ye log’ remained unreleased, but its recorded songs became popular.

He got married in 1953. He had 2 Daughters and 1 Son-Minal, Sailesh and Sushma (later she changed her name to Poornima)-who was a known singer from childhood in Hindi and Nepali films.

Bhola was not only unlucky in his career, but in his death as well. Raj Kapoor,Pran and some others of the Punjab Association of Bombay had planned a Career launching programme for his daughter Sushama Shreshtha, on 12-4-1971. Bhola Shreshtha got a Heart attack on 11-4-1971 and died instantly-just one day prior to his daughter’s first public programme. Sushama, however, very bravely attended the programme the very next day, sang songs and got a thunderous applause from the audience with standing ovation !

Minal Shreshtha, his eldest daughter, gave an interview on line few years ago. Here is its short version…

” Date of Birth: 17-06-1924
Date of Death: 11-04-1971

Bhola Shreshtha belonged to a Nepali family. His schooling and music lessons were done in Kolkata. His Grandfather was very fond of music and hence he developed an interest in the field.

Minal: My grandfather and grandmother were originally from Nepal. They later came to stay in Kolkatta. His reading habit was surprising.

Minal: He was interested in books on Philosophy, Music and works of fiction. His favourite authors were Freud and Dostoevsky. However he studied till matriculation only. He used to play with tabla in his childhood. K. C. Dey used to stay in the neighbourhood. He started taking Bhola Shreshtha to fairs. When K. C. Dey came to Mumbai in 1942 he brought along Bhola Shreshtha along with him. In his film ‘Tamanna’ he handed over the job of Assistant Music Director to Bhola Shreshtha.

Minal: Among the artists he had high regard for were K. C. Dey, Manna Dey and Ashok Kumar. They all came along to Mumbai to try their luck in the Film Industry. Khemchand Prakash was a friend of Bhola Shreshtha’s father he knew Bhola. He got him a job at Ranjit Movietone as an assistant Music Director and he started using Bhola as an Assistant Music Director till ‘Mahal’. In 1949 he became an assistant to Bulo. C. Rani for the film ‘Daroghaji’. In the film ‘Muqaddar'(1950) which was composed by Khemchand Prakash there were three songs for which orchestration was done by Bhola Shreshtha.

Minal: Bhola Shreshta called Khemchand Prakash ‘Guruji’ as he was his mentor. In 1952 he was an assistant to Husnlal-Bhagatram in the film ‘Kaafila’. Nazariya(1952) was his first independent film. He later gave music in ‘Nau Lakhahaar’, ‘Lakhon Mein Ek’. In the film ‘Lakhon Mein Ek’ (1955) he used Talat’s voice very beautifully. When Ghulam Haider passed away Bhola Shreshtha completed the compositions for the film ‘Aabshaar’. The song which was sung by Lata ‘Chale Aao Tumhein Aansu Hamaare Yaad Karthe Hain’ was very popular. Bhola Shreshtha got married in 1953. In 1959 Sushma Shreshta(Later Poornima) was born, who later became a famous singer.

Minal: Eldest among the three children is Minal, followed by Shailesh and finally Sushma. But Bhola Shreshtha did not live to see the success of his daughter. He died of a heart attack in Mumbai.

Minal: His last film was ‘Yeh Basthi Yeh Log’. There were some unreleased films also. He later worked as an assistant music director for Kishore Kumar. One of Kishore’s earliest songs ‘Jagmag Jagmag Kartha Nikla’ was recorded by Bhola Shreshtha. In all, he gave music in 9 films. The song mentioned in the Subject although composed by Khemchand had orchestration by Bhola Shreshtha. ”

In Hindi films, right from 1931 to 1970, there were hundreds of Heroes. Some rose very high, some became legends, few survived even after 1970, but most Heroes were forgotten. I am not talking about those actors who worked in just 1 or 2 films as Hero and then left the industry or became faceless entities, I am talking about those actors who , in spite of working in more than 10 films as Hero, could not make a mark and are remembered as character artistes in their second half of the career.

Some names come to my mind offhand, like Badripershad,Agha,Ajit, Jayant, Jagdish Sethi, Harish, Ulhas, Umakant, Jeevan, Omprakash, Ishwarlal, Amar etc etc.

Today we will know more about one such Ex-Hero….SAJJAN. Surprised ? Yes, Sajjan acted as a Hero in manyinitial films as a Hero, opposite the best and famous Heroines of his times like Nargis, Madhubala, Nutan, Begum Para, Nalini Jaywant, Shyama, Usha Kiran, Geeta Bali, Dulari, Veena etc.

Sajjan, ( 15-1-1921 to 15-5-2000) who most people remember as a small time villain and character artiste, was a very Handsome actor in his young age. His first film was Mera Suhag-47. In his career he wrote stories(2 films), Dialogues(2 films) and Lyrics. Some of his geets were sung by Talat Mehmood as NFS. some of his films were, Dhanyawad, Humlog, Nirmohi, Toofan, Muqaddar, Sainya, Poonam, Lagan, Sangram, Nazariya, Sheesham, Chalti ka naam gaadi etc.

Here is a short Biography of Sajjan-

Born on January 15, 1921 in Jaipur, his full name was Sajjan Lal Purohit. But he was famous with his first name in the movie world. Sajjan did his graduation from Jawahar college, Jodhpur.

He had a desire to be a lawyer but not an actor.

In 1941, he arrived in Calcutta and worked as an apprentice in a laboratory of, East India Company.

His initial breakthrough in films was as an extra in films like Masoom (1941), Chouranghee (1942). Sajjan left Calcutta during World War II and reached Mumbai. In Mumbai he worked as an assistant to famous director Kidar Sharma. At that time great showman Raj Kapoor also worked as an assistant to Kidar Sharma. He also worked as assistant to Gajanan Jagirdar and Vakil Sahib and got Rs. 35 as salary.

A poet by heart, Sajjan showed His talent when he wrote dialogues for Meena (1944) and lyrics for Door Chalen (1946) and Dhanyavad (1948).

Sajjan also acted in small roles in Prithvi Theatre. His acting debut film was Mera Suhag-47. After that Bombay Theatre’s Muqaddar was released in 1950. His heroine was Nalini Jayvant.

Now Sajjan was well established in film world. In 1950s- 60s Sajjan acted as hero or side-hero in films like, Sainya, Rail Ka Dibba, Bahana, Sheesha, Malkin, Nirmohi, Kasturi, Mehmaan, Lagan, Girl School, Paridhaan, Do Dulhe, Ghar-Ghar Mein Diiwali, Haa-Haa-Hee-Hee-Hoo-Hoo, Poonam Jhanjhar, Halla- Gulla. As hero his last film was Kabuliwala-61 and as an artist he last appeared in 1986 release Shatru.

Artist of more than 150 films Sajjan also worked in TV serials. In Vikram-Betaal he played Betaal. His other serial was Lena-Dena. Sajjan acted in more than 150 films. Though he was a reasonably good actor, but he felt very awkward while singing a song on screen. His Producers and Directors knew this and they gave him minimum songs. Thus he is on record in his 150+ films to have sung around 20 odd songs only, in spite of being a Hero in some films.

I have not seen this film Najaria, so I have no idea on whom or in which situation today’s song is filmed. However, it would be daring to visualize this Anokhe Bol song sung by Sajjan on the screen !

There were 10 songs in the film, but this is just the second song to be discussed here. 4 songs each were sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar and one song each went to Asha Bhosle and Geeta Dutt. The film was directed by Murtaza Changezi. Not much is known to me about this person except that he directed only 3 films- Jannat-49, Najaria-52 and Tankha-56. For 2 of his 3 films, the music Director was Bhola Shreshtha.

I be-friend-ed Sajjan’s son Suraj Sanim, while staying with him for almost a month at Mainpuri during the outdoor shooting of my friend Prem Kapoor’s film ‘Badnaam Basti’. Suraj also acted in Hrishikesh’s
Bawarchi’. I am not in contact with him for years now and do not know his whereabouts. In those earlier days I had visited him at his home in Malad and had talked with Sajjan many a times.

ARUNJI,

But for this article of yours, I would have never known that Sushma Shreshtha was daughter of Bhola Shreshtha.
Thanks for such a rare info.
