रोक सकता हमें ज़िन्दान-ए-बला क्या मजरूह
हम तो आवाज़ हैं दीवार से छन जाते हैं

Rok sakta hamen zindaan-e-bala kya ‘Majrooh’
Ham to aawaaz hain deewaar se chhan jaate hain.

[Can prison of calamity stop us?
We are the voice which can infiltrate the wall].

This she’r was written by the young Majrooh Sultanpuri probably sometime in the 1940s. Perhaps he was goaded by the idealistic impulses when he was  associated with the Progressive Writers Association (PWA), a left-oriented ideological group.  Nonetheless, for Majrooh Sultanpuri, it has been a quick transformation – from an idealistic poet of PWA  to a lyricist in the film industry.

PAAPI (1943) was produced by Satish Batra under the banner of Batra Productions, Lahore. The film was directed by Majnu. The star cast included Madhuri, Zahoor Raja, Majnu, Salma, Satish Batra, Moti, etc. I do not have much idea about the story line of the film. In a snippet appearing in one of the ‘Filmindia’ issues of 1943, there was an indication that it was a story built around the life of a sinner who had embarked upon his vicious design and poisoning the society. Probably, the film must have ended with the sinner getting reformed.

JHUMKE (1946), produced under the banner of Chitra Productions was directed by J K Nanda. The main star cast comprised of Akhtar, Gajanan Jagirdar, Satish, Lalita Pawar and G N Bhat. The story of the film was written by Saadat Hasan Manto. I could not get much information about the film. Even the information on the the star cast of the film was sketchy. Luckily, I found a review of the film in one of the issues of ‘Filmindia’ of 1946. A shortened version of the review is set out below:

During my routine searching of songs online I came across this film title ‘Dhamki-1945’. And since there had been a film with this same title in 1973 which has already made an entry on the blog, this falls under one of my activities of bringing ‘films with similar titles’ to the blog (so far for the films released before 1980).

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 8
———————————————————

ROOP REKHA (1948) was a film that I was not aware of until I heard mp3 clip of a song from the film. An advertisement of the film which appeared in one of the issues of ‘Filmindia’ 1948 revealed that the film was produced by Padam Maheshwari under the banner of Chitrakala Mandir and it was directed by Samar Guha. Veena Kohli and Rehan, probably new comers, were in the lead role supported by Asha Poshley, Smriti Biswas, Durga Mota, Ajmal, G N Butt etc. I have no idea as to which genre the film belonged to but going by another advertisement of the film which says ‘Burning Punjab brings out the challenge picture of 1948’, the story appears to be based on the social impact on Punjab immediately after the partition.
