As I come in to the third post in this series, I must put on record that I have still not been able to trace and secure a recording of the second duet from the film ‘Dukh Sukh’ (1942). The duet – “Mori Atariyaa Pe Aa Jaa, O Pardesi Panchhi”, is sung with Sitara. And I repeat my request to my friends and fellow contributors on this blog, to please inform in case one has any information about the availability of this song. I am hopeful we shall get to hear this song, since the physical record number is known – N26105. Right now, just waiting for the luck to strike.

I had never heard of the film SANYASI (1945) until a few months back. The film was produced under the banner of Kardar Productions and directed by A R Kardar. The cast included Shamim Bano, Amar, Shyam Kumar, Ghulam Mohammed. I checked the available songs on internet and found to my surprise that there were 10 songs in this film out of which 7 songs were sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali (both solo and duets). These songs were written by Pandit Madhur and set to music by Naushad. Other than these, I am not able to get other details about this film such as genre and box office success or otherwise of the film.

Names like BN Sircar, Nitin Bose, PC Barua, Debaki Bose, Premankur Atorthy, Prafulla Roy, Kidar Sharma, Aga Hashr Kashmiri, RC Boral, Pankaj Mullick and many more come to mind when one thinks of the film industry, Calcutta and 1930s.

A tongue in cheek song, if ever there was one. The first line itself suggests that this one is going to be a very very interesting song. Recorded sometimes late 30s or so, this is a gem of a song from the pen of Pt. Madhur. What a pace and a rhythm, reminds one of, ‘aayee bahaar aaj aayee bahaar’.
